Hello,

I am new to this forum.  I've been doing some research on the Impression and I'm seriously thinking about purchasing one.  It seems like a cool phone that meets my needs.  However, I was hoping someone can help me find the answers to some questions that I've been unable to answer myself, despite spending a couple of hours researching them.  (If these have been asked before on this forum, I apologize; I haven't found a thread where they are already mentioned.)

1.  Does the Impression have the "pinch-zoom" capability found in the iPod?  For instance, could I download google maps, and then place my finger and thumb on the touch screen, and spread them apart across the screen to zoom in?  (I've found this feature very useful on iPhones for when I am driving along -- being able to zoom in on a map without having to fiddle with buttons on the phone makes it easier to keep my attention on the road.)

2.  One of the big reasons I'm interested in the Impression is because it doesn't require the $30/month data plan (unlike the iPhone, which AT&T uses to rob you blind).  I understand google maps is going to require a data link, but if I only use it a couple of times per month, can anyone give me an idea of how much data is going to be transferred (or what kind of data cost I will likely incur from such infrequent usage)?  Also, does anyone have any idea how much data transfer will take place when I am first initializing google maps on my phone?

3.  I am going to use this phone for the following purposes: (most immediate needs are listed first; least needed functionality listed last)

     a.  making calls
     b.  sending texts
     c.  calendar (including syncing with google calendar and Microsoft Outlook Calendar)
     d.  Using google maps a couple of times per month
     e.  surfing the internet/answering emails in yahoo, gmail, hotmail once per month (or once every other month) when I am waiting in an airport for my plane

Based on my above list of needed functionality, do you see any potential issues with me purchasing an Impression?  I really like the phone; Samsung as a brand has never let me down; and I think blackberry and iPhone are over-rated (although, like I said above, I really appreciate the pinch-zoom feature on the iPhone).

I realize these are newbie questions, and if I am asking them in the wrong place please tell me.  I just would like to get input from actual users/owners of the Impression before asking AT&T sales reps these same questions......

Thanks for your time!

The impression has a resistive touch screen. It is not multitouch. No pinch to zoom. Should only find that option if available on capacitive touchscreen phones.

As far as google maps or any gps application I wouldnt. Maps are downloaded as you move and can run up the data quickly.  If you are looking for a gps application to show where you are on a map and thats it then the yellow pages app preinstalled on the phone might use less data. Still might be cheaper to get the data plan. $15 alone or $10 when combined with unlimited texts.

Only issue is the text bug that many have. After an unknown number of texts you must reboot your phone because they wont send. And again you are talking about surfing the internet, reading emails, and using google maps. Best you get a data plan.
