Hi all,

I was curious to know if anyone has thought about or done any research on reverse tethering their impression.. I know some people were experimenting with it on the omnia and other devices so I thought it would be cool to do here.

Just to clarify, reverse tethering would be the opposite of a standard tether: i.e. instead of using your 3g connection as a network for you computer to access the web, you use your home broadband internet and let your phone share that connection through a pc (either via usb or bluetooth since there is no wifi in the impression)..

Of course, bluetooth would be rockin, but i'll take any thoughts on the matter that people may have..

cheers,
dave

I thought about searching it out to see if it could be done. It would be good for anybody who doesnt have a data plan on their phone have a safe way to get software on it.

Have you researched it in anyway? Were they at all successful with the onmia. If the omnia cant do it, it would probably not be possible with this phone.

It did look like they got something working on the omnia.. but it's unclear if they're only talking about straight tethering or reverse tethering.. anyways, some luck was had with ICS and WMWifiRouter.. The only issue with the impression is, of course, no wifi chip like the omnia has.. it would be cool to do it through bluetooth though. I'm either always at home or always at work so I'm always around a broadband wireless connection as well as bluetooth dongles. So I don't have the data plan and wouldn't mind laying in bed and using browser from time to time without cracking open the laptop and still be able to use my connection at home..

I used to do that on my old Palm based PDAs. I could chill in bed or on the couch and surf and IM.

I don't think the Java phones have the appropriate Bluetooth profile support (I think it was a serial network profile I used on Palm), but I'll take a look at Kris's Impression next time I see her and see if anything looks promising.

This would be nice for someone like me that doesnt have a data package. What would be sweet since the Impression doesnt have a built in wifi would be if someone could come up with an attachment to the phone which would plug into the spot where the cable usually plugs into so you can use wifi on your phone or make a the wifi adapter bluetooth if you want that spot to be free

Was looking around to see if you can connect you phone into something that would give it wireless capabilities and this is what i found

http://www.fommy.com/accessories.asp?make=Samsung&model=Samsung+Impression+A877&cat=WiFi+Networking

This one right here (now discontinued) seems to be able to plug your phone right into it making it wireless capable but dont know if it would even work that way

Punisher that is a heck of a find. I got to tell the guys on the eternity site. Oh by the way check the mgmaps post.

Dont bother with those links. I just called them. They are not at all for the samsung impression. That is normal wifi usb stuff for you computer or laptop. They have nothing to do with the Impression. Very bad advertising. And the guy on the phone was an idiot and couldnt even speak english well.

im guessing indian??? Tongue i hate thier accent have had 6 bosses all of whom who are indian and have an indian accent.

well that sucks that they are for the computer but the one that i showed you in that second link i thought you could plug in a printer or something to make it wireless so i would of thought you could do the same with a phone. Ill keep looking around for something like that and if i come across something ill let you guys know or if anyone knows someone who makes electronics for cell phones see if they can make somekind of adaptor for the phone b/c i found adaptors to make other phones and palm piolets have wifi so why not the impression have an adaptor??? someone can make a killing off of that

If you have a router with print server capabilities it should do the same thing. But Im not sure there will be any drivers to make it work.

Ya thats the problem while searching for a solution i came across this unusual device

http://www.telamon-corp.com/broadband/pdf/gprs.pdf

you apparently remove the sim card from your phone plug it into this device which plugs into your laptop or computer and from what i can tell it uses your data package so you are never without internet

Yeah well I just read it more carefully. It is used to tether your laptop off your phones service not the other way around.

ya it basically is useless if you have a usb connector for your phone b/c you can do the exact same thing with your phone as the adaptor. I really have a funny feeling that no one has an adpator for a phone to make it wifi capable all that im coming up with is adaptors for the computer but ill keep my eye out if i see one for the phone
