Three people at my work have the impression. Two of us have the bug at work, one of us doesn't. Since we're all texting from the same place i'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with the location. We all text quite a bit (5k+ per month). The firmware is all the same.

In the rear of a retail store on my breaks, the phone goes from Edge "E" [with zero or 1 signal bar] but still sends texts, then to "3G+" while sitting in the same location.   I usually keep 15-25 messages in my Inbox and 15 or less in my Sent box.  I only text to those who are in my Inbox, and text about 30 messages per day.  The text message bug happens about every 3 to 4 days; I have only sent one MMS (pic) message to date.   Lastly, I have never turned on T9, nor used the touch-screen keyboard to text.

Long-time Cingular/AT&T user; I've owned & used these devices, in order from oldest to newest: LG CE500, Motorola ROKR E1, Samsung Sync, HTC 8525, & Samsung Impression [AT&T replacing it with the LG Vu Plus].

I upgraded due to AT&T's rude desire to require the $30/month smartphone data plan!  So, I have an unlimited messaging plan only.

and i have replaced the sim card,
master reset the phone,
and got a new impression and still have the problem.

Now that I have an unlimited messaging plan, I will update if necessary... no issues so far
