It seems using mgmaps offline can damage your phone. It is not mgmaps itself but using too big of map that somehow corrupts the memory of your phone.

It happened to me and another impression owner. Now I see it has happened to yamaha with an eternity.

If you are going to use mgmaps offline keep your maps small and under 100mb to be safe. I am not sure of the limit but all 3 of us had a map over 1gb on the phone and all three suffered a boot up that stops on the load up screen. Your phone is bricked.

Now where did I see that before? Hmmmm...... Its true phones on the eternity's site are dropping like flies because of the large amount of files in the map sructure. You have been warned to keep them smaller than 100mb. But to be safe I wouldnt risk it at all.

For more info see the mgmaps forum at mgmaps.com.

Besides now that we have google accessing our GPS, we dont need mgmaps at all, I even deleted it off my phone..

I get my Turn by Turn from amAze gps ... and now I can lookup anything and get my traffic report from google maps gps

I had the same problem with my phone. Luckily it was within the first week of having it so ATT gave me a new one  Grin I tried putting maps on that were over 1GB. I'm just glad to know the cause of it now. Makes me less worried about it getting bricked again, as I won't try that again lol.

Thanks for your post about Google Maps with working GPS, Agoattamer. Between Google Maps and Amaze, I'm pretty set. It's too bad about mgmaps, though. I would have liked to have offline maps for when I'm out of network. In that case I guess I'm out of luck. Not worth the risk of bricking it again lol

Thanks for the complement gj13. But let me tell you something most people dont know. The agps on our phone only functions when you are in network range. Some people think it is only used when making the initial connection. In fact its what keeps the satellites connected to our phone. So if you were out of network those maps will do you no good anyways. If the master key is found then the assisted part can be disabled and the gps in our phone will function like a true gps. ATT had it figured good.

Ah I didn't know that. That's strange. You would think once it locked on a satellite it would be set. Oh well. I hardly go out of network anyway.

I was also thinking that loading from the memory card would be faster. Before it bricked up on me, the maps were actually loading much slower than getting them from the data connection. Not sure if this is because the maps were too large in file size or because the phone was about to crash.

The maps are quite large. It took me a day to delete the map file of my computer. Way too many files for our little phone to index.

Some aGPS's work without a network signal and some don't. Ours just happens to not work.

i basically gave up with the storing maps on your phone. it took too long to get them made and once you got it on your phone you realized that it wasent that detailed so now i use it as a compass and also for the speed so i can amaze my friends when im in the back seat of their car and can tell how fast they are going just by looking at my phone

Couple of questions.

Is there a way to store a map on the memory card so we can look at it on our phones but not use it with gps? I am going to Japan and I would like to have a map in case I get turned around when walking. Yes the locals are nice but not all speak English.

I just did a level 14-17 zoom of the Tokyo metro area and it was a lot bigger than the recommended 100mb limit.

How do you get a compass on the phone?

How much bigger was the map? Have you tried it yet?

Our phone doesnt have a compass in it.

Wasnt sure. He said a compass. And you still have to be moving for the compass to work. Not very effective unless you hold the phone exactly in one postion and move in a staight line.

its funny because you talk about using the sun for direction and i have always done that. i live in rural TN and i hunt and i always navigate by using the sky.

its funny how more and more technology just stupifies humans.

The file is about 750 meg just for zoom level 17 on the roads view with no topographical stuff. I will try and see If I can cut out the stuff I don't need.

What size do you think is safe to not brick the phone? I read 100 megs but people only say they brick the phone at about 1gig or more.

Agoattamer: Just want to say thank you for all of your work with this phone. It is much appreciated.
