Does anyone know why? I still can't figure this out. The Impression has almost every feature a smart phone has. Of course current smart phones has better physical hardware, but just because of that?

Its not the hardware. It is more like we dont have windows, symbian, android operating system. They tend to use more data intensive apps and multiplex. Hard to describe.

Our phone is close but it is really just a fancy fliphone with touch screen.

I know one thing about non-smart phones. The unlimited data plan is much cheaper. AT&T smart phone data is $30. Unlimited for my impression is $10 on a family plan with at least 2 phones.  Wink

Soooo.... what you are telling us is; that the iphone is not a smart phone either! Not only that, it is without a fancy hardware keyboard!!!

Much like the rest of you, I'm proud to not be locked into an expensive data plan with proprietary apps that I have to pay for. I enjoy our free ".jar" files and our affordable monthly rate. It a far more intelligent alternative to being spoonfed apple products. So what, we goatbreak, its worth every minute!

The Samsung Impression... a "smart phone" indeed.  Grin

No the iphone is a smartphone. It runs an operating system that stays connected to the internet all the time.

One thing I've noticed, at least with AT&T, is that nearly all WiFi-capable phones are required to use the smart phone (PDA) data plan.  I would guess that if the Impression was WiFi-capable, then it would be considered a smart phone... at least in AT&T's eyes.

And now if you have a smartphone they make you have the data plan, I was using my Tilt on Wifi and they now require you to keep the data, so I got the Impression instead. It is actually good that it is not a smartphone, being that the data is 10 bucks cheaper and it does basically the same as most smartphones.

Hey sweet!  I never thought about that.  I'm on a family plan (me, mom, sister)  would all three of us have to have a data plan for it to be only $10?  Or could i just get the data plan myself for the $10 while mom and sis are non data?

You should be able to get just you on it. They say you have to have unlimited texting, but people are getting 10.00 data without it. just have to keep asking until 1 that will let you, Quig

Funny how that works, isn't it?  I was at a bestbuy a few times over the weekend, looking at some things including the phone.  The impression on bestbuy.com is free with contract extension and $79.99 in the store.  Sales woman said she couldn't not match the price since their website is owned by a third party or something.  Went back the next day, looked at phones again, and someone different offered to match the price of free for me :-D .... so i got it

The Impression isn't a smartphone, we are all smart phone owners for choosing the Impression! btw, I started off with unlimited text for my family and had unlimited data on my phone at $10/mo. Took the unlimited text plan off (at Att.com) and still kept my $10 data plan. Skip the AT&T phone center and just do it yourself.

To answer the original question, the Impression is not a smart phone because it does not have the organizer features. It has a calendar app, yes, but you can't use it unless you plan to live in a different time zone six months out of each year.
