I discovered this fix today. It may not sound like a big deal, but some people may want to have applications running in the background when you aren't actively using them, rather than having them paused and suspended.

As always, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Open up your dial pad and enter the following, *#6984125*#.

Choose INTERNALS and enter the following, *#3818790*#.

Hit "Java Settings"

Hit "VM Setting"

Hit "MVM User End Key Option"

Select "Hide Only"

Select "Save"

Your phone will automatically reboot

This was tested to work on my Solstice, although Agoattamer tested it to work on his Impression. I am not sure to what degree notifications work in the background if at all, although we are fairly sure that this does enable background applications.

I discovered that first thing this morning.  I own an Eternity and my apps already run in the background. They don't suspend. They minimize.

This fairly sure stuff doesn't cut it. An app that I know for sure has the capabilities to run in the background is mgmaps. Try it to get a definitive answer as to whether or not you can now run apps in the background. Start it up and enable mobile tracking then suspend (hide) it. Travel a reasonable distance then open it back up to see if it tracked you.

I used some apps that should have been doing processing in the background, but i will definitely try a mapping application just to be 100% sure. Remember, I am running a Solstice, but as I said, Agoattamer verified it also. Thanks.

I've been running ebuddy, amaze gps, and opera mini for the last hour on a car trip. It works, and it's awesome!

Awesome! That was a good find jjesusfreak01. I wasn't trying to discredit you or anything. It is just easier to convince people when you have proof. Agoattamer and I discovered the lack of this feature when he was working on the Hiisi project.

I wasn't trying to take anything from you with that post I made about me finding that setting in the morning before you either. I never said anything about it so how could you have known. lol.

Well, it was to be expected that with a lot of people rummaging through the internals menu frantically at the same time that multiple people would end up finding the same things. I actually wrote to Agoattamer about it first, and he verified that it did what I thought, so I wrote the tutorial.

Im still working with him on one particular setting in internals and the test menu that may be beneficial, but it requres an eternity user to test, because it invokes the level 2 debug, and no one in their right mind who cannot reflash would consider doing that.

PS: Im also running a Solstice, so it is important for anything I figure out to be verified by Impression users anyways before it is posted here.

So how is having an application minimized more beneficial than suspending besides having it run in the background all the time instead of being a pause button? Also, would it drain more battery?

Well obviously the application is still running. Could be an IM service or and email application. When something is suspended it is paused. And if its running it is using more battery power than something thats paused i would assume.

How does the Impression respond / operate when you have multiple apps minimized ?
Any serious lag when trying to send a txt or phone call or searching thru contacts?

Just curious before I even bother to try it.

Actually the max open is three. You'll get a cant open more apps warning after that. I agree though no lag.

Actually the max is 5. There is a new hack not yet posted that can increase the open apps from 3 to 5. But why you would need 5 apps open at the same time doesnt seem feesable. Phone would probably be very slow.

I just changed the setting and did some testing.  I opened Bolt, amaze gps, and opera mini.  Started a map loading in amaze then clicked a link in opera, then a link in bolt.  Then I opened the music player and started playing music then I made a phone call.  Didn't seem any slower than normal.  Mabey I could tell but barely.  Then I checked and the map had finished loading in amaze, and in bolt and opera the pages had finished loading.

And I only get Edge here at home so I know that the map and web pages normally take a bit to load so it's not like they loaded instantly before I switched programs or anything.

Also the little "paused" icon on the right behind a suspended program in the program list is now a little "play" icon.

Thanks guys for another great modification!
