Does the impression come with gmail or do I need a stand alone app?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't, not too sure. I know gmail offers an app but I think the use of it is crippled.
I think most have to use a third-party software for it.
I don't I own one yet, but thats what I've acquired from lurking.

It works with gmail.  Go to m.gmail.com in your mediaNet browser.  Click "Get faster Gmail" and download the java version.  It works pretty well.  I use it on the Impression.  Touch screen also works.  There is one drawback in that it will ask fairly often "ok to connect?" to which you say "yes."  There is a hack out there in the samsung-eternity.com site to get rid of that message, but I have yet to confirm  that.

I just got my Impression a couple of hours ago and loaded up the mobile gmail application.  It works, but the qwerty keypad doesn't work with it.  Is there a way to fix this problem?

Probably not. I am finding the same problem with other apps. Downloaded Opera Mini and Bolt and neither use the qwerty. Kinda defeats the purpose of having it. I just use gmail directly from the web page and can use the qwerty just fine.

How does Opera Mini not use the physical keyboard?  I use the keyboard all the time with Opera.

yeah, i figured out both gmail and opera mini.  for both of them, you need to just double click on the text screen to make the screen turn black, then the qwerty works just fine.

Yes VKitty is right. The qwerty works with those browsers and gmail. And there is a modification on this site to make the apps full screen and never ask. There is even a modification if you would like gmail to go landscape when you open the keyboard.

Mod to get never ask and full screen

http://www.samsung-impression.org/lg-rumor-tips-and-tricks/amazegps-with-no-settings-bin-hack-and-no-deleting-phonedb_data-00/

And while you are doing that method you can add this to make your apps go landscape when you open the keyboard.

Can you use the qwerty keyboard for web addresses with Opera?

I'm Googling all my web pages since I don't want to use the 1-9 alpha pad.

Yes the qwerty and the virtual qwerty work with opera. Double tap in the text box, scroll down till it says enter symbol, double tap on enter symbol, tap in blue box.

I am able to type directly into the address bar with opera without having to do insert symbol or the blue input screen, etc. I have opera set on rotate when the keyboard is out. Not sure if if works when it's set for always landscape. Haven't tried it.

I just modified the jad to rotate. See Agoattamer's post here:

Ok, I can set opera mini to go to landscape itself. There is an option in settings to go to landscape mode. But even when in landscape I can only use the number keys. And of course our keyboard doesnt have the cooresponding letters on the number to know what you are typing.

Is it any different when you use the code in the jad? Can you now use the entire keyboard without all that double tapping?

I can type directly into the address bar. It doesn't go to the generic blue input screen either. However, the blue screen still comes up for any input boxes inside of websites for some reason. I used the rotate modification in the jad (btw thanks for your post on that  Grin)

I attached the jar and jad files I'm using right now if that helps.

Well in order for the blue screen to come up what did you do then? Thats not typing directly into the text bar. And also I tried typing in the blue screen and that also only uses the numbers on the slider but not the whole keyboard.

I have the files. I will add the landscape hack and give it a try. Evidently the landscape code I found must allow for more than just turning the screen. Will report back.

You are so correct gj13. Adding  MIDlet-ScreenMode: ROTATE to the jad along with the fullscreen hack also allows the keyboard to type in the text box.  So it must have some control over the keyboard.

So adding the rotate code would be good to add to bolt browser, opera mini, and gmail. Any others that this might work with?
