I have to say these things are great. The AMOLED screen is beautiful and I love the feel of the touch hardware. Unfortunately the software is sub-par. Even though this thing could easily display the full web site in an uncompressed format, someone (either Samsung or At&t maybe both) decided to dumb down it's full potential by giving it only media net for a browser.

I've tried both opera mini and Bolt, both of which work but imo not very well. They do not make good use of the touch screen, and you can not use the full qwerty keypad.

My question is: Is there an alternative to media net with flash, that also makes good use of the touch screen and keypad?

Java phones are not capable of flash. And the full qwerty keyboard should work with both opera mini and bolt.

Thanks for the response. I didn't know Java phones couldn't do flash that explaines a lot.

I wish their was a completely different OS for this phone. The hardware seems to have so much potential.

As for Opera and Bolt, unless I'm doing something wrong, they seem to want to use the telephone keypad to create text.

After you tap in the box to enter text it brings up a blue screen. Tap in it and it brings up your keypad and a black background. That is where you are at I think.  Turn your phone on its side and you can use the virtual qwerty. Pull the keyboard out and then you can use it.

Why in heck does the browser have options for enabling flash and Javascript... neither of which seem to do anything?

The NetFront v3.5 browser that came with my Impression.  It has options for JS and Flash.  i have confirmed that JS is working here.  Flash can be checked here

I understand that Java and Javascript are not the same, as I develop software using both.   I think the idea that Java-based phones are incapable of doing flash is only a correct as no one has been willing to develop either 1) A java version Flash (that's a hilarious idea) or 2) permit a Java browser to instantiate a natively-compiled Flash plugin...

The thing about idea (2) is that that is exactly what regular browsers do!  (They just don't do it from Java... which doesn't matter, a system call is a system call).   I think the issue is that Flash has only been ported to a limted set of platforms, and that set does not include either a java layer or the Impression chip set.

I'm starting to dislike this proprietary OS and am inching towards replacing my Impression with a Propel Pro.  I'd miss this great, full keypad... but at least I'll get a common OS in Windows Mobile.

windows Mobile Os is nice, But You do know about frequent soft resets, or the laggy program if you install much. All The freezes when your doing important events! All Of those times you want to go on the internet, then you find out how horrible it is!

Maybe i'm going a bit to far here, but anyways, I wouldn't get windows mobile as a phone, it's much better as a stand alone device, Sometimes I wish I have gotten an impression, and if all goes well with the warranty in December I will have one Cheesy

i see that it doesnt say it here but i read it on another site i think may have said so just to intice people to download the program however it does not matter any way because i have messed with the program for a little while now and it does not function properly it says the first time it launches you should get a registration page and you have to register to get a key to use the program but the page doesnt come up and there is no other way to register but from the way its setup from what i was able to get into its seems that you are correct about it being just a media player but a very complicated one
