i cant believe i cant find the answer to this, im sure its here somewhere but i swear i have been looking for like an hour (being sidetracked by other informative topics at least)

does the gps feature itself take a data plan? i found someone saying that the geotag feature doesnt require the gps package, but does it take data.

im assuming the answer is no because mgmap i think it was, doenst take data, but i just want to be sure,

the other thing, and im sure its just going right over my head, but where is the gps data, i see these picture you guys post to show you got the feature to work, but i dont know where to look for the actual data (i'm a noob im sure)

i just need to fork over the $10 for the data package, but wedding and honeymoon come first.

As punisher said, mgmaps can be used offline. Only because you can cache maps and put them on your memory card. Any gps app that downloads data and maps from the internet of course uses data.

Please ignore what vkitty wrote. Her post was unfortunately about 110% wrong. Too much catnip. She is cut off. GPS and triangulation are 2 totally different locating devices. The gps and triangulation both contact the cell towers to get a fix on your location. Triangulation is only an approximate. The gps is an agps that contacts the cell towers to get a quicker satellite fix. The only app that uses triangulation that I am aware of at the moment is the version of google maps which we dont use because we have a gps version. But both still need data to download the maps.

so then the gps part doesnt use data but when using "gps" it downloads the map directly which does take data.

so then the geotagging feature wouldnt use data?

and i have garmin maps, can you use that data in any way with mgmaps?

The data used for the agps to connect should not show up on your bill. So as long as no info or maps need to be downloaded from the net then you would be safe.

You cant use garmin maps with mgmaps. There is a small tutorial on here and mgmaps has a forum which will show you how to cache maps using googlemaps, yahoo maps, and a number of others.

Agoattamer,

So, although I'm seeing small 5-7KB bursts of data showing up on my ATT account-site which are clearly associated with periods of GPS signal gathering, you're saying this won't be charged to my account?  Why not (not that I would complain)?  Are you referencing this from somewhere or are you telling us this from experience. :-)

The MGMaps application is really something VERY special.

Thanks,

Jon

I'm doing everything that I've read to do at http://www.mgmaps.com/stored/.

I have no idea if I'm being billed or not....  I installed MGMaps (and have stored maps on a SD card)  after my last billing cycle.  I will find out in a few days, I suppose, if I'm being billed or not.  After the GPS acquires signal, there is no sign of continued data usage.

I should note that MGMaps doesn't work at all for me when the phone is in airplane mode.  Did I read somewhere on here that once the Master Key was discovered (and it has been) that it wouldn't work as an assisted GPS?  Have I missed something else on configuring my phone for that?

There are gps settings for stand alone. But that is by default. Tests were done. Nothing we can do for you sorry. Others have used it without a data plan and didnt get charged. Don't know what to tell you.

If others are able to do it without data usage/charges, then it's clearly something I'm doing (or not doing, more than likely).

I'll just keep trying to track it down.  (I'm a Linux user, patience to get my hardware/software to do what I want is part of the game.)  What version of MGMaps are people using?  I downloaded the latest stable version (1.39, I think).
