Hi, I just bought the phone and joined community.
I am sure this is a silly question but are you guys using
data plans? is it necessary to have a data plan to get the most out of it?
Sorry for the silly question.
Thanks!

I havent had a data plan since I have gotten the phone you dont really need it but it makes the phone SOO much better. If you dont have a data plan then you should really make a fake connection so that you dont accidently connect to the internet. The only reason why I dont have it is b/c i cant pay for it.

What you can do with a data plan is a lot of things like gps, yellowpages, browse the internet, get a third party messenger and lots more things if you look around the forum

what i should of said was a dummy network Tongue (just woke up so wasent all there)

to make one go to
menu>settings>Connectivity>Network Profiles and hit create at the bottom and you can give it a name if you really want to (i called mine dummy network) and just hit save w/o changing anything and then go back to the main menu and under Games & Apps hit
more>connections>Default(but hit the arrow >>) and hit the brown gray box which is your dummy connection and now you dont have to worry about apps connecting to the internet and costing you big bucks

As a question (I really just don't know) are there any connections for cellphones that don't require communication directly through the ATT network?  I mean, are there places/networks that a phone could use that don't cost money?  Could one set one of these up for someone's home?

I really just don't know anything about cellphone networking.

There are no proxy or other ways on the ATT network to get data that we know of.

Short answer.... no. The only way around using data on ATTs network is WiFi, which the impression doesn't support. You'll be able to use another cellular network, assuming it's a GSM network, but the phone will have to be unlocked. Either way, it's not free.. You'll be paying someone somewhere for data access on anyone's network.

By doing this, will you still be able to send/receive picture messages?

Yes you will. But you should also go into the applications settings and direct medianet and cv to use the dummy profile also. There is a sticky on the forum telling how to do this.
