Hey all, I just picked up my new impression and I'm having a few issues.

1)  The salesperson told me I could use Mobile Mail to access Gmail, but I don't think this is true.  What are the best ways to check gmail on this phone.  Just do it via the browser?

2)  I'm having lots of trouble syncing to my Mac.  All I want to do is transfer over podcasts and music.  First I tried to do it via USB, but I don't think this works without insatalling the software, which I believe is not OSX-compatible.

So then I tried to do it via bluetooth.  I synced the two devices, but when I selected "Browse Files" on my Impression, it tells me that the connections fails.  I cannot figure out what to do.

Any help is appreciated.

ATT salesmen are always full of crap. No gmail in the mobile email. You can access it via the browser or get the gmail app from google mobile.

Not much you are going to do with a mac and this phone. However in mass storage mode you should be able to see the memory card with usb. You might be able to see the phones memory with media player mode. But Im not sure on that one.

The Impression ships with AT&T Mobile Email 2.x, but version 3.0 is out now and it does support Gmail, POP3, and IMAP.

BUT it costs $5/month for some ungodly reason, and it still won't alert you with those accounts.

The Gmail app is great, I just wish it had alerts. I have all my Gmail forwarded to xxxxx@mms.att.net, but alerts would still be nicer.

Mobile email 2.0 that is installed on your phone doesnt. You can get mobile email 3.0 from ATT which costs $5 a month and it does. Or you could download the gmail app from google mobile. This is exactly what is said above.  Did you misunderstand something?

Yes.  I didn't understand that it was not pre-installed on the phone.  Thanks for clarifying.

I wonder if eventually Mobile Email 2.xx will be upgradable to 3.0 free of charge... probably not. I'm not a big fan of Emoze anyways. They make ATT's Express Mail for smartphones and it's the worse piece of software ever.

When people brought in their phone's because of email problems, 9 times out of 10 it was because of Emoze's software.

Emoze makes mobile email 2.0 and 3.0 also. They also make the email for verizon, t-mobile and sprint. If you have a cell phone with email it is probably written by emoze.

Yes it is... At least Mobile Email works better (with the exception of the alerts) than their "push" email solution with smartphones... Even when I installed their unbranded software for WinMo, I never got it to work right.

Emoze has a java version you can try. Its limited to 1 account and certain size of attachments. But it is hidden on their site and doesnt tell how much it costs till you buy it. Also is beta and hasnt been updated within a year.  It looks good but the NO-support would scare me awar. Seems it might be some kind of beta for them to work out the bugs in carrier versions.

The unbranded java version of emoze works with Gmail as well.... if i'm not mistaking, which is certainly a possibility  Wink.

But your right, it's hard to find and hasn't been updated. Emoze is too busy trying to fix the carrier version of their software than updating their own. I'm looking at their website now, and I dont care what they say, it's not push email!

True push email comes in the way of either an Microsoft Exchange Server or Blackberry Server.... Any phone that'll be supportive of either one of these connections you can bet is going to have the 30/month PDA plan because of the data they consume. The same goes for attachments... They don't want the network congestion... therefor, no attachments.

Email services also have to support this feature in order for them to work.. "Push" programs, like emoze, check your pop3 email periodically and push any received email through to your phone. You loose the "Push" when it has to check for email. Gmail and Hotmail support push email...(both sync with Exchange Servers)...but your normal ISP pop3 email addy probably doesnt.

All that doesn't matter though, because the Impression doesnt sync with Exchange Servers... From what I understand, Mobile Email's servers in the cloud check your email periodically and sends a push txt message to the phone giving you the alert.

It's all about the data... If you want a constant connection with an exchange server, your going to have to pay more. For our phone, I think getting data for 20 bucks cheaper a month is well worth it even if it's not actual push email.
