Mine went out last weekend.  Angry I went back to using my samsung sync and now I'm not sure why I switched in the first place. Thanks for the fun year and a month, but i think I'm gonna stick with the sync till I can bail on att and samsung. Maybe I'll replace the digitizer if this one ever goes out.

With great appreciation, and many thanks to the members who took the time to video the way to replace the flex cable and Digitizer. I was able to replace both in my non-responsive phone and now it works better than when I received it.  once again Thank You

My screen used to have the typical symptoms of a flex cable going bad, so I replaced the flex cable today. Now I turned it on and the screen works, but the keyboard doesn't. ~10% of the keys don't work, sliding it open doesn't unlock the phone, and all of the side buttons except for the lock key don't work either. The keyboard lights work when I first start the phone, but once I lock the phone and they go out, they won't come on again until I reboot.
I did a quick search on the forums and someone suggested to do a master reset via *2767*3855#, but that didn't work.

Any help?

The only thing I can think of is maybe something didn't get attached back properly.

I wish last year (07/10) when my phone touch screen messed up this was around.  I had to get a lg Vu since no one knew why the screen were messing up like that.  I just got my impression back up and running again last night with just the digitizer lol.  I'm reusing it again cause I like the big screen.  Hard to get use to the weight again though compare to the lg vu that weight nothing.

Yeah, that was my guess too. I was about to open it up again when I decided to give it another restart, and surprisingly it worked. Not sure why it did, but I don't mind. Tongue

This is the best post because it works!!!  I was having trouble with my touch screen, it was being inter mitten. I followed the video even though I did not have a digitizer.  Once I got to that part I made sure all the connections were strong and clean.  I reassembled and now my phone works like new.  Thanks, you saved me money!

With my best,

unfortunately i found this site a little late. I reset my phone using the master code and now it is stuck on "tap here" but since my screen isn't working - i can't seem to get rid of it. Not sure if I can get calls or not. Also my internet can be a bit slow so haven't seen all of the video's yet. Just to be clear, do I have to disassemble the entire phone to get to the digitalizer (which I guess I need to get replaced)?

My phone is still under warranty for a little bit but not sure if I want to send it off and haven't tried AT&T yet. I've got PC studio up on computer so I have all addr, pic, music from phone and can send messages. But now can't make calls because the phone is on "tap" and won't let any other functions happen. Anyone have a way around the tap screen until I can get it fixed? I've built computers, but the phone disassemble has me scared. All help greatly appreciated!!

No way around it at this point.  And yes you have to disassemble the entire phone.  Order both the digitizer and flex cable because it could be either.  And I suggest to get the digitizer already glued to an existing case.  There are plenty on ebay.

I had the "touchscreen off by ~1inch" problem coming and going, as well as generally poor touchscreen response when it was working. I ordered a new digitizer using one of the links posted by Agoattamer (http://cgi.ebay.com/SAMSUNG-IMPRESSION-SGH-A877-BLUE-FACEPLATE-DIGITIZER-/310234506348?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item483b6ae46c).

I followed the instructions in the video and had little problem replacing the digitizer. I did have one screw that was a real pain to remove, with both my screwdriver and the screw nearly getting stripped. I managed to avoid that calamity, but be aware that it's a risk if you decide to replace it. I also lost a screw, the one which holds the external speaker in place. I had mistakenly picked up a piece of plastic flash thinking it was the screw, and must have dropped the real screw somewhere on my dirty kitchen floor. I thought about borrowing one of the other screws for it, but it didn't seem necessary and I couldn't pick a screw that was the right length and unimportant enough to use.

The only other issue I had was popping apart some of case pieces. They really snap together snugly, and I was always afraid I'd break some component that would make it unable to repair my phone. But with enough patience, I'm back to a fully-functional Impression.

It was amazing how getting to the digitizer required taking apart just about everything in the phone. I didn't watch the video until I had already committed to do in this (after ordering the new digitizer), but I was pretty surprised to see how many total steps there were, and the amount of time it took. It really made me appreciate the mechanical and electrical complexity of cell phones!

What is the difference between the digitizer and the flex cable videos. They both show removing the flex cable?

Well the flex cable connects the 2 halves of the phone together. So to revove one you have to remove the other. Both videos are technically the same.

I don't know if anyone hangs out here anymore but just in case someone does I wanted to share my good news. I HAVE A WORKING IMPRESSION AGAIN!!! My touch screen went out a couple of weeks ago and I was able to get the info I needed here and order the digitizer (and the flex cable for the heck of it) and my sweet bf took it apart and fixed it for me last night. I've had my phone for 2 1/2+ years now and I still love it. I was so sad thinking I was going to have to replace it with something I'd probably hate. (just for the record - he said it was HARD - and that the time frame someone posted of 2 hours is right)

Glad you got it working.  I still have mine as a spare phone. Replaced my digitizer and cable once. Actually it was very easy compared to the newer touchscreen phones out there.
