Ya today the same thing happened to me. I can only touch thing only 1 inch under the the icon. and i dont what i did. one minute it was working another minute it stopped working. for those looking into getting the pics and songs and vids off the phone look into using TKFileExplorer (you would need to have the usb computer connector to use this method.) But if u already have it then u can go to the Media folder and download everything that is there. I am going to be doing all that with games also since i haven't saved anything...It is going to be a jerk (please excuse my French) to put it all back but at least i can back it up. I stopped at ATT store on my way home and told them my problem. They gave me an ATT Device Support Center Referral Form since the phone is under a year old. If what everyone says is true i should expect to get a brand new phone. I will stop by their stores on monday and then let you guys know how it went...

EDIT: NOTE TO AGOAT. you are the leading brain on all thing impression here on this forum in my opinion. I was wondering how can one go about and avoid this from happening again if i get a new impression? Would a screen protector do anything help?

shivmister...it won't last long.  back up everything now.  I don't know about the calendar on the imp, but since i went back to my propel, another samsung piece, I found that in the option to view the event list, there is also an option to copy to the sd card.  This way, I can still use the calendar, and when my imp comes back, I can move the calendar appointments back to the imp when I put the sd card back in. 

As for a screen protector, won't help.  I had a protector on mine and a hard case over the whole phone.  Didn't help.  ATT may not help you, but call samsung if att doesn't .  My imp was a year and a couple of weeks and samsung said it was still under warrantee if it showed no signs of water damage or abuse.  putting the screen protector and case on it kept it scratch free...and never saw water.  There are no charges to fix my phone by samsung.  I'm just waiting for it to come back to mama (me).  It's due on Tuesday, but I'm traveling for work and won't get to see my baby until Thursday night.  Maybe I'll be lucky and see it MOnday.

you were absolutely right. it worked great for a day and then the problem came back. then went away and came back again. each time worse than the time before. It seemed too good to be true. So on monday i went to the ATT store where they do troubleshooting replacements, and i got it replaced. the person there had seen similar problems and knew right away they could not fix it there. I was in and out withing 30 mins (had to get the pics/movies/audio/and contacts transferred otherwise i would have been out in 15min). As long as you are within one year of your warranty you have nothing to worry about. Warranty on the new phone is whatever is left on the old warranty or 90days which ever is longer. Also, they give you a "like new phone" not a brand new phone. Everyone will probably get a refurbished. They dont know why this happens. You do not get a new battery nor back case. All you get new is the gut of the phone.

If the problem occurs that you lose your touch screen capabilities, dont bother with recalibrating it, it will not do anything. Just go to the ATT store and have them replace it for you.

First - I love this forum!!!   I needed help with this exact same thing. I called my insurance and they sent me a LG VU Plus. I think it sucks, it is a down grade compared to my impression.
After reading this post I decided to fix it myself. I have ordered the replacement sliding cable and digitizer for $30 on Amazon. I have taken my phone apart several times in the past so this will be a breeze!!!

After I fix it, I will let you all know how it goes!!!!!

shortly after i got mine from my brother it did the same. i got replacement parts off e-bay and its very responsive and has not gone goofy on me since. (been 2 weeks) pretty sure the flex cable was the problem, but i got both the cable and digitizer to cover both ends.
