Master Key has now been found and this method for installing games/apps has just been made obsolete. Please use this thread for installing and troubleshooting TKFileExplorer. There is no longer a reason to delete the phones database file. Games and Apps can now be installed safely using the master key.  Please use the link below to see the new method for installing for users without a data plan.

http://www.samsung-impression.org/index.php?topic=906.0

Please take note that the Impression cannot use PC-Studio 3. It can use the Eternity's version IB5 or our version IC8 which cannot backup contacts

How to: Install PC Studio 3 and Games/Apps (TKFileExplorer) Guide

Before posting a reply please read over the other pages, I know theres a lot of them but there are a lot of users that have asked the same questions and other users stated different methods that worked for them.

*****************************************************
This is a 'how to' guide on installing PC Studio 3.  Many people are having problems getting New Samsung PC Studio to work (including me) so I made this small little guide for those of you who are having these problems. New Samsung PC Studio doesn't work for my Windows Vista 64-bit, it also doesn't work on my XP. It does however work when I connect through Bluetooth, but with the USB Cable it just keeps giving me a line in use notice. After many install/reinstallations I just reverted to going back with PC Studio 3, as it did what I wanted/when I wanted.

USB Cable Used: Samsung Model: APCBS10BBE (this model is for data transfer and charging) Which I purchased [here] which came out to $5~, and that took about a week to get to where I live.

*****************************************************
Included in this guide:
Uninstallation of previous drivers/programs.
Installation of PC Studio 3
Installation and usage of TKFileExplorer
*****************************************************

1. Uninstall previous Samsung USB/Modem Drivers as well as any PC Studio programs. (Yes, all of it. Just wait till the last one to reboot)

2. Go to the following website: "No longer Used" and download PC Studio 3 (3.2.2 HG5). This version seems to work fine with the Eternity but do not update it to the latest as many users (including myself) werent able to detect the phone after. (72.4 MB)

3. Once downloaded run the setup file. (Make sure the phone is unplugged)

4. Once installed it will ask you an update. Press 'Cancel' as you already have the version you need.

5. Now Connect your USB Cable to your phone. Make sure the phone is set to 'Samsung PC Studio'.

You can set your phone to "Ask on Connection" (Menu -> Settings -> Connectivity -> Select USB Mode -> Ask on Connection) With this setting, whenever you connect your phone you can have it connect for PC Studio, as a Media Player or Mass Storage (like a flash drive). Make sure its set to Samsung PC Studio.
Let the drivers install.

6. Once finished you might have to restart PC Studio 3 as well as your phone to detect properly (while still connected). Once detected it should say 'SGH-A867 Connected'.

7. Go to Phone Editor and click on SIM, it should load all your contacts. Select All (By Right-Clicking) and drag it to the PC. This is how you can back up your SIM card to your PC.

*****************************************************
This Concludes Installing Samsung PC Studio 3
*****************************************************
[The following method contains procedures that add/removes files into the internal memory and has the potential to brick (unusable) your phone. Users at this forum are not responsible for anything that you do with your phone. Do this at your own risk.]

When using TKFE always have your phone set on "PC-Studio" and not "Ask". It will not connect on "Ask" most if any times.

[Tested: 05/07/09]
[Update: You can take out your SIM card before installing any games/apps (or even accessing TKFileExplorer), this reduces the chances of you losing your contacts if you're having trouble saving it to your PC] (Make sure you do this before deleting the database, do not install the games, turn off the phone then take out the SIM card. You must do this before you start anything with TKFileExplorer as Turning off the phone without deleting the database will increase your chance of bricking your phone.)

To get back your contacts from your SIM simply do the following: Menu -> Address Book -> SIM Management -> Copy Contacts from SIM -> and select 'All' or the contacts that you would like to Copy -> then 'Copy'.

[Update: If PC Studio works fine but TKFileExplorer does not, try rebooting (turning off/on) your phone while its connected to the USB]

[Update: Also there are times when trying to transfer the .JAD/.JAR files will cause the connection to hang or disconnect.  Wait till it says Connection lost then connect again, this time transfer the .JAD file before the .JAR file as the .JAD file is much smaller and if it transfers successfully it'll be easier to transfer .JAR file. Yeah its weird but I tried it numerous times and it worked for me heh.]

[Update: And please do not skip any instructions, or at least read over them, this is a step by step process and yes you can go to another step and start there but this will just give you questions that are already answered or have been shown. Please read over the thread as 'most' questions that you may have might be answered by our users]

One last warning. Before you start this process be sure you have your contacts backed up on your sim card and you have pulled your simcard from the phone before starting this process.

8. Download TKFileExplorer: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9CVPFA1K or search through the forums. Run the program and it should look like an explorer window. (Make sure PC Studio is closed as well as the tray icon)

9. Go to Settings -> COM -> Click on the drop selection under 'Port' and select one that’s available.

10. Click 'Connect'

11. The phone should connect if done properly.

12. Games are located in /Exe/Java/Games/, When transferring games make sure that you have both the .JAR and .JAD files. JADGen can be downloaded: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NJQ3JQJB Just drag the .JAR file and drag it to JADGen.exe to generate a .JAD file. Shown [here].http://www.samsung-eternity.com/index.php/topic,2172.msg13981.html#msg13981

When copying the game onto the phone, it is easier to create a folder in the phone and transfer the .jar file then the .jad file one at a time. Dragging multiple folder/files may cause the connection to freeze, lag or lose connection.

Do not delete this file till you have all your jad and jars in their respective folder.  Double check to be sure. When you are positive everything is correct you can delete it. After deleting it give it a few seconds to finish deleting before disconnecting and unplugging the cord.

13. Once the games/programs you want are installed, you can go to /DB2/ and delete phonedb_data.00. (Before you delete this file make sure you backed up your contacts through PC Studio as deleting this you wont be able to see your contacts upon reset, refer to step 9)

14. Once you deleted the database file, remove the cord and restart your phone. You will have everything in there except your contacts (technically its still there but invincible?) so you will have to go back to PC Studio to retrieve your contacts. Or you can reinsert your sim card and load the contacts back from it.

If TKFileExplorer won't connect for you but PC Studio does then make sure PC Studio is turned off and you have closed the tray icon (by the clock). If both PC Studio and TKFileExplorer won't connect then it is a driver issue with your USB cable and your computer so you may have to redo the steps again as listed above or you may need to install the USB Modem Drivers: "The page you requested is not available" also try using other USB ports on your computer for your computer to re-identify the device. And make sure your phone is set to PC Studio mode.

If PC Studio 3 does not work for you, try using New PC Studio:"The page you requested is not available" its the same process as PC Studio 3, it just doesn't work with 64-bit so I couldn't make a guide with it on my computer and was having problems with it on XP, but it may be different for everyone else so try that if all else fails.

*****************************************************

This concludes the guide, if you have any problems or questions just reply them to this thread.  Smiley

Users who have unlimited data plan do not need to use the TKFileExplorer method for installing games.

You can use websites such as this: [here]http://rumkin.com/tools/sprint/index.php (or other wap sites) to upload your games/program files.

Like most users have mentioned be sure to reboot your phone if it connects with PC Studio and not TKFileExplorer.

You may have to delete the .ini file that TKFileExplorer creates after every use:

And always try another USB port if the others don't work properly, this is just a matter of getting the drivers to load properly.

How does JADgen work? It's pretty simple, just download the .exe then drag and drop.

I had problems with the original software provided. The drivers would not load in any way. I tried 3 different fixes and alternate downloads. So then I tried this, also to no avail. I appreciate all your work here. I uninstalled all the software first installed with Revo uninstall and installed this version. Now the phone is never recognized in Mass storage or PC studio. I am more of a windows mobile guy and I know that when you change setting in that os for sync you have to erase all prior memory of having been synced in the phone. Does this Symbian work that way too?

Ok so for me the trick to getting IB5 to work is to install all drivers and try to connect ... It will not dont worry. It will show up as samsung modem in the program. Now you know you have it installed correctly. Now restart your PC and your phone. Phone should be on PC studio mode. After PC restarts and is on desktop with IB5 monitoring for a connection plug your phone back in.

To be honest I have to reboot my pc and phone to get them to connect again if i disconnect. Weird but it works.

I can not get Studio 3 or IB5 to work with my Impression. I got the IC8 to work, but it does not have contact management to copy the contacts to the SIM.

Can I use the Impression to copy the contact to SIM, then use this procedure to load games into the phone, then copy the contacts from the SIM back to the pjone. Will that work?

Yes you can Copy your contacts to the sim then reload them, keep in mind you also loose your cellphone favorites, But If you really need the game/app, then Go for it.

You dont use pc-studio to install games. If you have data you use wap and then tkfe to make permissions work for some apps. If you dont have data you use tkfe and risk bricking your phone if you are not careful. Best to borrow a friends sim card with a data plan to install games and apps.

ok - I have an Impression, and am trying to connect to TKFileExplorer. Have IC8 on one PC and the Eternity version IB5 on another. The Impression connects just fine to both.

Have shut down PC Studio on both, and disabled device monitoring. Have downloaded TKFileExplorer and left the phone connected via USB in PC Studio mode. Have selected the COM port available and clicked on connect. TK File Explorer looks to connect to the phone and a "Phone (P:)" disk drive icon appears with a + sign next to it, and then I get the error message "Error: The communication link is lost." Have tried to connect as well over a Bluetooth serial port. Same result.

What am I missing. How do I get the connection to stay?

Try rebooting your phone while still connected to cable. If it still wont connect reboot computer and try again. May have to keep rebooting phone. Once it recognizes the correct drivers it works every time. The first is the hardest for some reason.
