is it possible to use it as a modem via bluetooth for another device, like a jailbroken ipod touch?  I have already managed to do file transfers between my samsung mythic and my ipod using an application on the ipod called ibluenova.

edit:  i found an app for ipod touch called ibluever.  Would this be compatible

some issue is keeping me from using my impression tethered. And it is on two different computers.

First off...I was able to tether to my Toshiba A355-S6925 running Vista home premium. About two weeks ago I tethered and then nada.

Just got me an Acer Aspire One 531h netbook running XP home and I cannot get it to tether on the netbook at all. Tried it through the usb AND bluetooth...

Any help for me out there? please tell me it is my own bonehead self that jacked up some setting somewhere.

thanks

@db_tanker: What settings do you have to connect with?

In simple terms, all you need is the modem drivers that come with the Samsung NPS software, or that can be found on this site, and then set up a regular modem connection using Windows' "Set up a dial-up connection" wizard. You don't necessarily need login information, as the phone provides that through it's network profile.

Barring that, the NPS program(New PC Studio), that comes with the Eternity and the Solstice (the one I'm using now) has an excellent Internet Connection wizard when the phone is detected.

Post some settings and I will see if I can help.....

@b.adams: The standard 3G connection, per industry standards, is roughly @ T1 connections, or 1.5 MB/s. That's what I get in most cities that have good 3G networks. As I get closer to some towers, the speed can go up to 6.5 MB/s. I am using VisualWare's MySpeed and Speedtest.net for results. There is no way AT&(bill you for breathing)T could boast broadband speeds unless they hit 1.0 MB/s. And also, I have been told the 3G+ means more stable(reliable) connection, not speed boost.

Are you using the Qualcomm drivers? Those aren't meant to be used as USB Modem drivers... Try using drivers that are built for the task -

http://www.samsung-impression.org/samsung-impression-how-to/samsung-modem-usb-modem-driver/?action=dlattach;attach=1262
found in :
http://www.samsung-impression.org/samsung-impression-how-to/samsung-modem-usb-modem-driver/

You can also download the Solstice's New PC Studio (NPS) program to use the drivers it provides (least recommended as the software can crash on you). Good thing is, once you install NPS, you can get rid of it and the drivers stay!

After installing the new drivers, look for either SAMSUNG CMDA Technologies in the drivers list or SAMSUNG Electronics Co, Ltd. if the drivers completed correctly. Use the instructions on the above linked post. After that, see the fist of this post for a detailed list of instructions for connect with the modem - http://www.samsung-impression.org/samsung-impression-how-to/impression-as-modem/

At any rate, post the process you used, including what software you installed to support the phone, on this thread and I will have a look-see at whether it should work or not...

I tried using my Impression as a modem today and it worked great. I downloaded the drivers suggested here. I went to network connections and created a new connection. I chose dial up and entered the number posted here. I disabled my wireless connection on the computer. Connected my Impression with the phone set to PC. It found my phone and sees it as a modem. I connect as a dial up and it doesn't ask for a password. I am using it now. I officially love my phone!

Which version NPS did you install? As long as the version you have is not actually for the Impression, but for another similar Samsung phone, then it should have an Internet Connection widget that you can pull out of the puzzle piece icon at the bottom left of the NPS screen.

Better yet, I will make a tut. on my next posting here for tethering within the NPS program itself!!!

Standby for my next post......

As promised, my "Samsung New PC Studio "Internal Internet Connection Wizard" (Short name)

Follow the 5 steps to connection and happiness....friends or life not included....

1. After connecting the phone in the program, click on the puzzle icon.
2. Pull out the "Internet Connection" widget.
3. Click the "Add" button at the bottom to tweak settings.
4. Create a name for the connection (this name will also show up as a dial-up connection in your Network Connections screen in Windows).
5. Select SAMSUNG Mobile Modem and leave the other settings blank. These settings are different than the ones I usually post here, but they are the settings recommended by Samsung, and work great.

See below picture for reference:

I am using the Solstice version of the software:
SAMSUNG New PC Studio(New PC Studio Version 1.4.1 (Build AD2)

or

I just purchased a new XPS laptop. (Windows 7 HP) I've got an Impression. And like so many people here I have had zero luck with any of these instructions. I've never had luck with PC studio. Even before I got this laptop and was on a desktop with XP and using a Blackjack 2, I could never get my phone to connect using that software. I just installed PC Studio for the 4th time and unless some nice people can give me a good link to the right drivers and step by step me through it I guess it's on to plan F.... I have unlimited data on my phone and a wireless connect on the laptop. No bluetooth on the laptop so the data cable connect is what I need to do here. Any helpers?  When I load PC studio it loads but I get all types of pop up showing errors. Initialization errors, number errors........all types of bad crap. This shouldn't be this tough. ATT is no help. Samsung is no help. Dead links and Windows 7 doesn't seem to like any of it. Thanx in advance.

I am not sure what you are using other than the PC Studio, and I know NPS is pretty buggy, especially the one for the Impression, but it seems like you might need to uninstall your current version and then restart your PC.

After that, install a different version of NPS, like the one for Solstice(link provided) in my last post. Soooo..... if that doesn't work, uninstall all Samsung phone spawned software, and install these drivers:

http://www.samsung-impression.org/samsung-impression-how-to/samsung-modem-usb-modem-driver/?action=dlattach;attach=1262

Those are just vanilla drivers, without the other bloatware to install.
Not sure what else I can tell you unless you can identify whether the drivers are actually working or not.

Try taking a screenshot of your Device Manager with the USB devices expanded and post it, or if you are more advanced, use SAnDRA from SiSoftware (google it) to analyze and upload the report in .htm format (preferable as its easier to read).

You have to verify the phone connects to your PC first.

Well, good luck.

If all else fails, use your goatbroke GPS on the Impression to find a store and buy yourself a few cold ones while you tear up the OS.

I downloaded the "bare bone" driver and disconnected my wireless connection. When I went to set up a dial up connection, that option wasn't available. I checked the box that read "show all connections unavailable on this computer" and wha-la. There was my dial up option. I followed your instructions and when looking for "choose a modem" (you wrote to choose the Samsung mobile driver) that drop down menu wasn't there. In vain I entered the *99# dial up number but under properties I get no modem or network card. So not having the "choose modem" option I guess is the situation. I appreciate your time.
When I travel away from home I guess at this point I'll be looking for a Burger King restaurant off the highway. C-R-A-P  I'm trying to keep off the fast food.  Roll Eyes

Wow! I've been reading through all nine pages. I just got my Impression last night.
When I asked the dealer I got the phone from if I could tether it or use it as a modem, he said no, I'd have to get the $60 plan. I almost didn't switch from T-Mobile to AT&T over that, but I recalled I had no problem tethering with the Blackjack which had the T-Mobile chip in it and going on my laptop. T-Mobile was kind enough to set it up for me with the data plan at the store too. Worked great.

That's right... T-Mobile don't charge anymore than the data plan to tether. I've been with T-Mobile for 10 years and felt it was time to change. Maybe I made a mistake as I signed the agreement last night.

With that in mind, all it is... is GREED on AT&T part and I won't feel a bit bad doing a work-a-round to get it to work on the data plan. They charge extra for that plan anyways.... And if I'm correct, AT&T want to force you to do the $60 plan to use their usb stick. It's all about the dollar folks.

I'm going to try to tether the Impression to my gateway netbook with Win 7 starter using the data plan later today.

What is interesting is you can get a truly unlimited data plan with the IPAD for $30 a month.  Unfortunately It will cost nearly 800 ato buy the IPAD with the assssories to make it resonable and even then it's limited compared to a laptop.
