Wow! I've been reading through all nine pages. I just got my Impression last night.
When I asked the dealer I got the phone from if I could tether it or use it as a modem, he said no, I'd have to get the $60 plan. I almost didn't switch from T-Mobile to AT&T over that, but I recalled I had no problem tethering with the Blackjack which had the T-Mobile chip in it and going on my laptop. T-Mobile was kind enough to set it up for me with the data plan at the store too. Worked great.

That's right... T-Mobile don't charge anymore than the data plan to tether. I've been with T-Mobile for 10 years and felt it was time to change. Maybe I made a mistake as I signed the agreement last night.

With that in mind, all it is... is GREED on AT&T part and I won't feel a bit bad doing a work-a-round to get it to work on the data plan. They charge extra for that plan anyways.... And if I'm correct, AT&T want to force you to do the $60 plan to use their usb stick. It's all about the dollar folks.

I'm going to try to tether the Impression to my gateway netbook with Win 7 starter using the data plan later today.
It was easy to get online the with the instruction here. I'm typing this while online with the Samsung hooked up with the netbook right now.

Strange too as just yesterday the rep at AT&T said it was impossible to do without the $60 plan.  Roll Eyes

I downloaded the "bare bone" driver and disconnected my wireless connection. When I went to set up a dial up connection, that option wasn't available. I checked the box that read "show all connections unavailable on this computer" and wha-la. There was my dial up option. I followed your instructions and when looking for "choose a modem" (you wrote to choose the Samsung mobile driver) that drop down menu wasn't there. In vain I entered the *99# dial up number but under properties I get no modem or network card. So not having the "choose modem" option I guess is the situation. I appreciate your time.
When I travel away from home I guess at this point I'll be looking for a Burger King restaurant off the highway. C-R-A-P  I'm trying to keep off the fast food.  Roll Eyes

Forgot to add that sometimes the modem doesn't "automagicaly" show up in the dial-up modems box. In that case, use the Phones and Modems applet in the Control Panel of Windblows to add a modem. When you try to add a modem, look for hardware that matches SAMSUNG Mobile Modem.

Good luck with that, by the way. Windows may not detect the modem if it is connected to another program, i.e. NPS. *Disable or shutdown NPS's "start on phone connection" to allow Windblows to find the phone.* Also, check to make sure the SAMSUNG USB Composite Device shows up in the USB portion of the Device Manager window.

Post more problems if ya have them, as I likes to talk my *ss off.

Good luck and happy datajacking,

FireBert, data-ninja

This is the most useful thing I've ever seen in my entire life. No more being incredibly frustrated when I can't find wi-fi signals. And it's nearly as fast for web browsing as my cable is.

I will say, it took probably 45 minutes of jerking around with different drivers and getting windows 7 to finally accept one of them properly, but once I did, this is just awesome.

After disabling the 1394 connection, the wireless connection and the local area connection, I was able to connect to internet with my phone. Way cool! Thanks for the easy to follow instructions.

Thank you very much for this tutorial and the other one involving the driver downloads and installs. It ran without a hitch and I have a pretty fast connection. 230.4kpbs. This will help seeing as where I am living currently I have no internet connection. Again, thanks to all involved in this.

 Roll Eyes

I am thanking all of you that have made this possible and maybe this information will help someone else sometime in the future.

I am running win7 64x o/s and have succesfully connected my phone (samsung impression) as a modem with not a hitch one.

step 1 download samsung "SOLSTICE" pc studio here:  http://www.samsung.com/us/support/download/supportDownloadMain.do     and then enter SOLSTICE into the search box.  When entering the solstice page choose SOFTWARE under the downloads page and download the PCSTUDIO program and NOT the usb drivers!

Step 2 install the pcstudio program

Step 3 plug in your phone and choose PC STUDIO when prompted

step 4 Setup a new DIAL UP CONNECTION using the new connection wizard
do not use a user name or password (leave blank) and enter "*99#" in the phone     number box or dialing box.

Step 5 start surfing the web.

I hear a lot of people asking about speeds.  well I used www.speedtest.net and the answer for me on my side of the world is

UPLOAD  0.52mbps
DOWNLOAD     1.23mbps to 6.51mbps depending on where I am in the house

I hope this helps you folks with win7 64 bit os problems.

Well after hours of trying to get this to work last night on Win7 64bit and a few more hours tonight I finally got it to load ONE page...then it wouldn't load any more.

Getting it to even try to connect took a while til I finally got the right driver installed.  Then it will connect and fail, or connect and not work, or connect and load one page then no others.

In addition whenever I got one of the correct modem drivers installed that would allow it to connect(but not actually work well)it would cause the computer to freeze(ctrl-alt-del wouldn't even work to bring up the task manager) on the desktop right after a restart most of the time.  Going into safe mode and removing the modem drivers always fixed the problem.

I think on the rare occasion my internet is out it wouldn't be worth the trouble to even attempt this again.

Yeah "tethered" the beast works great right next to Canada and on the "Edge" network better then no internet for sure.  My question is this.  Has anyone figured out why i can't "ICS" (internet connection sharing) with this type of connection.  Or as someone found a way to make it work.  I'm not seriously trying to play Vid games on my xbox, but I thought it would be fun to be able to sign in on live via shared internet thru router to PC to Impression. If that makes sense let me know yo.

Anyone else finding that they can't access Wikipedia over their Impression when tethering?

I'm using my phone for internet for a few days because my cable is out and I can't access wikipedia.  It just loads on "bits.wikimedia.org" and won't do anything.  I tried a tracert but didn't know what to look for...just saw a lot of * * * lines.  It did get to wikipedia in like 16 hops but I can't get it to load in the browser.

Update: it works in Opera, not Firefox.  And it's like a mobile version there.  Anyone have similar issues with AT&T filtering content or something weird going on?

Of course they are filtering. Everything goes through their cingular proxy. Make a new network connection on your phone without using the proxy and see what happens.
