Is there a way to make the calendar do repeating events that occur on periods like "the 2nd Tuesday of the month" or "the 5th Sunday"?   What about something like "the 2nd Tuesday of every other month"?

Calendar algorithms are well know math problems that was solved a very long time ago.  Why don't most phones have a decent calendar by now?   Huh

I've yet to look at it, but I downloaded some software for the Solstice called "Samsung NPS" (looks like v1.2.1.IH1).  It is supposed to allow a Solstice/Impression to sync with Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express.  If my Outlook calendar had an event scheduled as I described above, how would it sync to the Impression?

The Impression is limited to recurring events every day, week, month, and year.  It does not offer more defined parameters.  Unfortunately, they must be put in manually. The software you mention is PC Studios- your impression will not be able to sync with features it does not support.

ATT has a very limited calendar and organizer feature.  The one on the Impression is the exact one that was on my Sync.  That is the one feature that is tempting me to go to Blackberry (torch).  Even the Captivate seems to have a calendar with limited features compared to similar phones from other markets.

I beg to differ (slightly).  Yesterday, I sent, via SMS, a Calendar entry (event) from my Treo, with a Bi-Weekly schedule.  It arrived to the Impression in the form of a *.vcs file.  On the impression, the file is represeted by a Hypertext link.  When it is touched, it gives one the options to 1.) "Open File" and 2.) "Save to Calendar".

I picked "Save to Calendar".  When I then opened the Impression's calendar and looked at the parameters of the event.  The "Repeat:" parameter has a value of "Every 2 Week(s)".

So, apparently, it can accept events with complex scheduling, but you can't create one.

I'll continue to experiment.

Here is the latest.  I had a calendar event on the Treo with a schedule of "every 2nd Tuesday of the month".

I transferred it from the Treo to the Impression via Bluetooth.  The Impression accepted it without any prompting.

When I look at the properties of that event on the Impression's calendar, the "Repeat:" parameter had a value of "Every 1 Month(s)"

But when I looked at the occurrence of the even for each month going forward, it was definitely scheduled every 2nd Tuesday.

This further proves that the calendar app is very capable of handling complex scheduling even if one can't create it using the apps interface.

Therefore, using the Samsung NPS software I referred to earlier (for the Solstice) to interface with Outlooks calendar should work just fine.

I saw some posts on some other boards (AT&T's, I think) that made reference to Google.  I'll try and find it again and post a link here.

I did some other digging.  I found the "NPS" in "Samsung NPS" stands for "New PC Studio".  I guess, at the time, it was new.

What I find interesting is that Samsung publishes different versions of PC Studio for different phones.

I wonder if the newer version of PC Studio has Outlook connectivity for the Impression.  Now, it seems Samsung publishes one version for both the Impression and Solstice.  I'll be installing it in upcoming days.

I'd like to also know how easy it is to move from one version (upgrading/downgrading).  I hope it is as simple as install/uninstall.  I hate dealing with MS Windows in respect to that type of stuff.

That's been discussed elsewhere in the forum.  When you search the forum, you will find most answers about PC Studios and which version works and what functions it allows.  I know you are able to import outlook into Google Calander so that is what I do for my work schedule- I then access it through the GCal app.

I am currently using the newest version of NPS 1.5..... and it does have a outlook sync widget. as far as install goes i tried the original NPS version 1.2.... on my laptop windows 7 64 bit  and it failed to install the drivers but installed the program so I thought I was in for a headache but i downloaded the newer version and ran it and it unstalled the prev version and installed the newer verion with no problems.

The closest thing I could find related to sync'ing with GCal is to use Outlook as a go between (sync Impression to Outlook and then Outlook to GCal, and vice versa).  Such a solution is already part of this web site.  Check out:

http://www.samsung-impression.org/samsung-impression-tools-and-data/calendar-sync-question/

I thought I'd seen something somewhere else, but I haven't been able to find it.  Apparently the Google Sync installer doesn't work with the Impression's default browser.  Maybe another browser would work.

So, to recap, we now know that the Impressions calendar can properly process complex schedules if they originate externally (i.e., Outlook, GCal, another phone, etc.).

Can the native calendar's interface be modified or another application (which accesses the calendar function) be used to allow one to manually create these events?

Short anecdote:  I had a friend who got one of the first Samsung Instincts.  He didn't really need a feature/smart phone, but he did need something with a decent calendar function to manage his kids activities (scouting, sports, band, etc.) as well as a few of his adult activities (business meetings, reminders, etc.)

For the most part, the Instinct was solving this problem, even interfaced with his Ubuntu/Evolution setup.  All was fine until he went to create an event and the phone would not allow him to complete the operation.

After doing some digging, he found, regardless to the amount of free memory he had, there was a finite number of events that could be created.  This is because the Calendar was not an application in the phone's OS, but instead a function on a microchip and that chip had very limited memory.

Now, the question:  Does anyone have any suspicions that the Impression suffers from the same problem?   Thus limiting any changes to the calendar's interface?

I apologize for my blatant, in your face stupidity, but can someone toss a guy some help here?  Reading the thread I got the hint that maybe syncing a bi-weekly appointment was possible, but so far i'm beating my head bloody on the brick wall trying to make it work.

I've tried:
1) syncing from outlook through PC Studio, the error i get there is: "unable to handle user command."
2) forwarding the event from outlook to my sms address, and the message  shows up with the message: "the part text/calendar was removed from the message as not supported"
....

what am i missing here?
thx

I don't have Outlook on my laptop- just  Windows Live mail (which replaced outlook express).
Just installed NPS 1.5 with no problems.  Have not had the chance to hook up my phone yet, but hope there will be no issues.  Anyone know if it can sync with Windows Live?
