Hi agoattamer, I hope you don't mind if I direct this question(s) to you since you seem to know the TKFE program and java coding pretty well.

So far, and I feel lucky in this respect, all of the adding games and apps, deleting locked games and apps, adding lines to the jad file to make an app landscape, even the 'increase your volume technique', has worked brilliantly on my phone with no known "bad" issues. (knock on wood!)  I don't dare do any "master key" mods unless it has your seal of approval.  (that's just my 2 cents).  If I could give cookies I would, but I’m still a Probie” (I watch a lot of NCIS on tv). Hehe.

Question 1:  I have installed a lot of games and apps using your method of “goatbreaking” using tkfe, which works perfectly.  But now, the games and apps folder: “Menu > Games and Apps >” “ is really cluttered (long list) and unorganized.

Can I use tkfe to add a subfolder for Games and a subfolder for APPs under the Games and Apps folder and then use tkfe to move the files into the appropriate subfolders?  Hopefully this makes sense to you.

Question 2:  I have a fair amount of experience with programming codes like html, xhtml and css, but limited experience with java.  I’ve been looking around the phone’s files system (which are many) and I’ve done some uploading folders from my phone to my computer so that I can safely explore the codes for possibilities like trying to link apps to a widget or a shortcut widget and also maybe getting rid of those awful phone lock wallpapers and instead using the wallpapers “I installed”  (remember, once upon a time the Earth was flat!)  Is there a simpler way to get all the phone’s files to my computer other than trying to upload one file at a time?  Tkfe is easy to use, but those files that are rather large, I get a time out issue.

Wow, sorry for the huge post and thanks in advance for any info.

One more for the road:  I’m intrigued, no irritated, that I can’t seem to find out any information about when the TKFE program was designed and by whom?  (just curious, I don’t really need to know, wait, that’s a lie, it’s really buggin me!  I’ve searched but didn’t find the answer.

Well let me start out by saying NCIS is my favorite TV program. Not the new version but the old slap in the back of the head version.

Adding subfolders will not organize your games and apps. Whether actually adding another folder will even allow the install, I dont know. I did have an application installed in an applications folder. But it just disappeared one day from the games menu even though it was still there and seen by TKFE. So now I try not to confuse my phone anymore than it already is.

When you go to the games/apps menu you see the combine content of the folders anyways. So sorting if possible would do us no good. But i really wish it would.

I used TKFE to take what it saw to my computer. It only took 15-20 minutes. I did it one main folder at a time. No sense in uploading your games and apps folder.  There is another program called qpst. The way it works is it uploads your phone before you even see the files. So after you connect you are waiting 5-10 minutes to see your phone's file system.  Both programs were written by samsung I believe for its technichians. There is another one called QXDM that I have yet to try. Too scary for me, and I believe I need a later version that is compatible with the phone.

The thing about the locked wallpapers is they are encoded. You will see a copy of them in the mediaset folder but those are not the ones used for the locked screen. I have yet to find them, as they are  out of reach.  But they are not in the file system. Trust me, I went through the file system part of the firmware for the eternity and they are not there.

Thanks for the info.  I also liked the older NCIS better, but I like the new ones too.

So if I remember reading correctly, you have about 30 - 50 ish games on your phone and some additional apps as well.  Then you also know what a cluttered mess it gets the more stuff that gets added?  Doesn't it kinda bug you to have to scroll and scroll and scroll?

When I first got my phone a few weeks ago, i started adding tons free wallpapers and pictures, including pictures I took from my real camera.  After a while I started having the same issue with too much to scroll through.  So I created a new folder, labeled it "More Pictures" and then checked off the pictures I wanted to move, and put them in their own folder labeled "More Pictures".  So now when I go to My Stuff > there is the 'locked' default folder for > Pictures and there is also the new folder > My Pictures, the one I created so I could organize them. And they don't overlap when I view them, they stay in their own folder.  Although, the locked wallpapers couldn't be moved but at least I could organize all the other pictures in different folders.  I did all of it through the phone, not tkfe.  So that's why i thought maybe i could do the same with games and apps but though it might be easier through tkfe as it's faster.  I probably lost you at this point.  Sorry.  I need to look into this further cause I need to get a better understanding of what you said about it.

So I have to ask, is your icon a picture of your girlfriend (wife) or do you just have long hair?  Sorry for being nosey, I'm just curious how you know so much about all this stuff?  Maybe do you work in the Information Tech sector, or are you just really smart about tech stuff? Your bio page doesn't give me a clue.  Hehe.

Thanks again for all the work you do to help people out, I like helping people figure out how to use and navigate tech gadgets as well.  Hmmn, sounds like I have a "self-important" trait to work on!   Grin

UPDATE:  "Goatbreaking"   - Brilliant.  I've used that term with my friends here in California and they say Goat what?  We'll get it to go around the world!

Nah thats a picture a member on the forum put put up and I took it as my avatar. Im 41, male and well hair isnt long anymore if you know what I mean. LOL.

I have always been a hacking geek. Computers, PS2, and now phones. I just have to know what makes things tick and how to make them tick better. I like to think that I made some progress with samsung java phones. I do what I can for the good of all.

But back to the folders. You can use the phone to create folders for pics. But you cant add folders for games and apps. The phone's built in file explorer only sees the media files. It cannot see the other folders.

Yeah, I knew it seemed too easy to add subfolders, and as usual, I picked the only "exception" to the rule.  I mean the more I thought about it, if there WAS a way then YOU would have of already done it.  Well, at least I can organize my pictures.  Better than nothing.

Hey, I have another question if you don't mind.  I've noticed that when I open a .jar file using notepad or word etc.,  for the most part it's unreadable as is.  I'm trying to learn how to understand how these files are written.  Idk, maybe it's beyond my understanding without some serious schooling?  I love challenges and i would like to learn how to  actually make widgets or modify one already written and test them somehow.  How did you learn about .jar and .jad files and how they actually work?

Oh well, Family Guy is on and I think I'll just watch, laugh and not do any more serious "thinking" till tomorrow.  My head hurts!

What I learned, I learned by lots of reading. For the most part, jar files are filled with class files. You will have to understand how to program with j2me to understand this.  When and how to use jads is still coming to me.  Grin

As far as widgets there is the samsung innovator site. I have a template that our in house programmer Bantam Bytes put together for me.   It allows me to make browser shortcuts for our phone. But thats about all I know. I do know that it is not possible to make a widget to open an application.

I don't know if this will help, I'm really new here and trying to read and experiment with as much of this as I feel comfortable with. This is preliminary but My wife bought a soltice the same time I bought my impression. It does have two folders set up , one for games and one for apps. I have connected her phone to TKFE the same as mine. I will try to look and see what the difference is if any and if there is anyway to duplicate the way the folders are set up on her soltice on the impression. I'll post back if I find out anything. I would also like to separate the folders. Mainly because when i scroll through the list i end up opening something and having to back out and try again. Can get a little frustrating. And a note to goat, dude you are amazing, I totally owe you a beer or something. The amount of time and energy you put into this and then to just give the information is a truly magnificent thing to witness. I wish everyone was more like you, would be a much better world to live in. Keep it up, you are  appreciated and admired.

Thanks. You can have both a games and apps folder. It will work. However everything will still appear appear in the same games and apps menu on your phone.
