You can't change the operating systems of phones.

Some people put a Linux Kernel on an iPhone, and I've heard about Linux on some Windows Mobile PDAs.  You absolutely can, you just have to figure out how.  Worst case scenario, there's a hardware mod to prevent non-official firmware updates, and you'd have to find out how to bypass that, but it is certainly possible.  Hardware modding it for Wi-Fi?  Now that one might not be possible, but it probably is.  I know someone who modded his AT&T Blackberry Curve with software and new crystals so it can operate on Sprint's Network, then he just spoofed the EMS number of the phone on his Sprint account, and BAM!  Access to the fastest mobile data, with cheap minutes from AT&T (he got a discount).

I've read a tremendous amount of Android stuff, and visit a lot of the major tech sites for new information on a daily (sometimes hourly) basis. I don't OWN an Android phone, but I have had the opportunity to play with other people's on numerous carriers, and different phones.

Let me tell ya, Android is a BIG deal. It's a competitor to the iPhone OS, except it's open source. It gives you the flexibility that it will run on multiple different devices, and different types of devices. Acer, Asus, and others are even making Netbooks, and Laptops that use Android as their OS. It's open source as well, so sites like this, dedicated to 'hacking' a phone would be completely legal, no matter how it was looked at. The Open Handset Alliance, which is basically what spawned from Android's release will at some point either A) Die completely, squashed by the phone companies, or B) Succeed, and force the Phone Companies to subsidse the purchase of unlocked phones. This would mean you could buy a phone from Radio Shack, Best Buy, or wherever... and have it work on any network, at any time. It might mean that based on the Carrier you select would offer competing subsidies, based on the device manufacturer, or what have you, but what it comes down to is that it offers us, the comsumer more choice, and that's what we all really want.

The other thing that makes Android a big deal is that since it's open source, most of the Apps for it are completely free, and in a great deal of cases are not even ad supported. There's a library of about 16k apps right now, as reported by Google, Android's creator. This is DOWN from 20k apps estimated by a lot of tech sites.

My favorite thing about Android though, is that it is not an Apple device, therefore it's easily moddable, and works around YOU, instead of you learning how to work around it. I know you can Jailbreak an iPhone, but why, when Android does all the same stuff, and doesn't NEED to be Jailbroken?

As more Android devices release, and Google's strategy for making money off of it becomes evident, we'll start to see what is going on with it more, and more, but right now, I think, and this is strictly my opinion, Android will change the way we do business with our phone companies, and change the way we operate our phones, and other MID's.

I so wish there was a way to get Android, but I have little faith that that is possible. Cry Even if it were, it would probably be too complicated for the average Impression user to put on their phone, wouldn't it?

Android and the impression is never going to happen. It is not as simple as loading up an android file and expectingh the phone to work. There is much work involved with drivers and such. The impression is just not a favorable phone for android for someone to spend that much time porting android to it. It is not a powerhouse or a world popular phone. It is just not going to happen.
