So, after a quick chat with a hacker friend of mine (everyone should have a hacker friend) and a little bit of research, I figured out how you can get the firmware for your phone. Someone has to find someone with high end phone repair equipment, such as an NS Pro box or a UST Pro 2 box. These boxes have the ability to read and write to any specific portion of the memory, including the firmware flash. It would be almost as simple as hooking your phone up to this box, downloading the firmware, and transferring it onto a USB key or CD. All y'all have to do is find someone with one of these boxes who knows how to use it. Any takers?

Im not going to buy one, but if we could find someone who already owns one, such as a phone repairer, we could possibly get them to do a flash dump for cheap.

As a newer member, I was reading through pages and pages of threads when I came upon this one. Has anyone tried this box out? I see that the last post here was from Aug, so I was wondering why this possibility for acquiring the firmware was dropped.

The box and the software costs way more than the phone is worth. The search hasnt ended. It just hasnt surfaced yet.  Next month the phone will be a year old. Warranty's will start to run out. If it surfaces it should start then.

@jyg i know this is old thread, but did you lock yourself out of phone or sim?
dumb question i kno. prob. the phone.  i dont remember how to reset after that kind of lockout. anyway if you locked out an ATT sim its kind of a PITA 2find an ATT person that will disclose that top-secret classified intel that is the PUK. i have them written down in my wallet or something.
what y'all are talking about firmware / rom swapping.. i've done it before years ago with a siemens phone, put m55 firmware on a m56. but thats just putting  the  UK software on the US phone. it changed some stuff, i remember getting new color themes & something else but its so long ago.
but to do it with an impression, (not sure why you'd want, although i would like to upgrade my firmware to enable some of those features that i see were still in the testing phase when my phone shipped) i havent tried an eternity, or any of those other keyboardless touchscreens, so i wouldnt know what is so special that you would want from them. but i would imagine that if you did successfully perform a firmware transplant from eternity to impression, you would lose keyboard functionality. maybe not, because they are basically the same phone and there may be an option deep in the settings to enable a keyboard. having not opened either phone i can't be sure that they don't use the same exact board, the eternity just having an unused connection where the keyboard interfaces.
2 things i remember from the internals, were that they were planning on adding a flash to the camera, and there would be something like text-to-speech. maybe for the gps.. driving directions. but i should continue searching for what i came here for. a bluetooth interface that allows more than just browsing/downloading each other's files. i got a program that i'm gonna test as soon as i get tkfe again. if it works, it should be pretty fun.

i wish i had a hacker friend and the pinouts for the samsung connector.
the easy part would be constructing the wifi adapter. getting the phone to recognize and actually utilize it is the part i would leave up to the hacker friend.
thats all thats been on my mind lately, although i should post this in a completely different thread.
back in the day, before phones had cameras, i got a camera attachment for my siemens. it worked, it had flash too. i was thinking WiFi attachment, with another female port on top so the voltage could pass through (so you could charge the phone and use your Wifi simultaneously.) i would pay good money for that. i mean like 50 bucks, because any higher and i could just buy a used phone on ebay that has wifi.
which i might do. or do the 300 dollar thing so i have a bigger screen, keyboard, usb ports, pcmcia..
well this kinda has something to do with flashing roms. the hacker friend gets to modify the rom, or port linux to the impression, then flash it to my phone!
lol. my phone needs flashing too. lucky its under warranty. don't set debug high.
4 questions they will ask you: did you drop your phone? get it wet? use any third-party software? any third-party devices? unless those last 2 were together and there was another one i forgot. of course if you say yes to any of those, say goodbye to your warranty.
