So I've read here and another place that the SDK for the Impression was release a couple of days ago.

1 - Is this true?

2 - What does this mean for Impression owners?

3 - How long before we see results?

4 - Is there a slight chance that this will mean POP/IMAP support for the Impression?

Great find!  However, if I read these correctly, the new widgets and/or improved Touch Wiz will only be available on future new devices.  I didn't read anything in there about updating existing phones... like ours!

Your thoughts?

I posted to the second link. Sure would be nice if Samsung would step up and take care of present samsung phone owners.  Maybe the more noise we make the more they might consider updates.

This sounds like its more based for us..."For the users, Samsung plans to debut web-based tool which can be used for creating widgets from RSS feeds and (maybe) custom content."  Also "will also continue to collaborate with developers to significantly expand its catalog of connected mobile applications in 2009."  Those seem to be based on our needs, or ppl with previous touchwiz UI devices.  U gotta also remember Samsung made it an effort to put Touchwiz UI on all their touch devices.  It wouldnt make much sense if they gave up on current devices and only looked towards future ones.

Well, the Impression has support for Java ME, so theoretically I think there could be POP/IMAP support now if someone knew how to work with those technologies in Java.

We have tried a few 3rd party email applications and they have all been below par. Our mobile email is written by emoze.  I see that emoze has a 3rd party application you can get from them. One mail account is free.  You have to pay if you want more.

It has a very nice gui and plenty of features but seems to have a few bugs yet. For example mail with attachments just seems to never get there and disappears.

GMail's app is really nice... as it can be on a phone I suppose.

But over all, I've come to the conclusion that Samsung development sucks, especially on these proprietary OS devices like the Impression and Eternity.  I'm a few hours away from giving up on trying to develop for the Impression's QWERTY keyboard.   There seems to be no bypassing all of the stupid input screens you must tap through to simply enter text.   *finger* to Samsung.     I've been playing around with the Samsung and Sun SDK's for a couple of weeks now.  I've found no solution myself or on the Web.  The Samsung Innovator site is crap.  They're only concerned with you if you're planning on some sort of development partnetship with them (i.e. you're a company).  Their developers do not participate on their forums.  They have no support system for development.

Nice hardware.  Crappy OS.   Crappy Dev Community.

Every time I'd search for answers, I'd end up at Nokia's development community ... makes me wish I had a Nokia phone  Tongue

Can you tell I'm disillusioned and disgruntled?

Did you check out the solstice ATT just released. Another phone with just very few features changed. They did it again.

Did you notice that thread about landscape and the browsers JYG? If you use the rotate in the jad it allows the slider to type in the text box without all those other tap tap screens. But without that line the slider only works after the tap tap even if you put the app in landscape with its menu.

now that's interesting... I'll have to try that...

I've been trying to be more consistent with the changes I make to JADs.

At least the Impression have a 3.0 megapixel camera though instead of 2.0.  Grin

Although I do like my impression, its the last phone with a crap proprietary OS I will ever get. I agree, there are virtually no development tools. Even if they didnt release anything, but made everything open source ... the opportunities would be endless. the fact that we have a pretty decent processor and do basically nothing with it is a real shame.

samsung will most likely not release anything for the old phones.

if they did, wouldnt the eternity's have our extra widgets? how hard would it be for them to at least make widget developing easy? but they dont, because its samsung.

I heard a rumor about an Impression widget update. And I also hope that they create an Impression with a faster processor.

Do not spread rumors of an update. There is no talk about a widget update for our phone. Anything you read on the internet about widgets is for new models of phones. We have a 1 in a million chance of getting a update. And there is no chance of getting a bigger processor. Quit dreaming.
