Has anyone here ever used apps from:
http://www.getjar.com/mobile-all-applications-for-samsung-sgh-a877/all/?o=popular    ?
There is an article in the Tech section of the NY Times with somewhat of a description here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/04/technology/personaltech/04app.html?ref=technology
I was wondering if this could be the easy way to add functionality to our phones.
I would like to hear if your tried it or if you have any thoughts about this possibility.

Getjar has a nice selection of free apps. They have more listed than anyone else. Not all are up to date. And just because it says they all will work with the impression, doesnt mean they will. They just dump all j2me apps in one category.  But it is a great place to browse and look for apps.  It is the closest thing we have to a reall appstore.

Do I need to use any other modifications in order to install these, or can I just browse to the URL with my phone and download?

It depends on the application. Yes you can use the jumpcode to download and install to your phone.

But most apps even though touch versions will still have the dpad at the bottom of the screen. You will then have to mod the app to make fullscreen.

If the app accesses the internet, uses the gps, bluetooth, or memory card you will have to goatbreak to allow these permissions to work.  Most 3rd party apps you download from anywhere you will have to install with TKFE or goatbreak to allow these permissions to work.  ATT locks their phone down hard to 3rd party apps.

agoattamer - I have some questions from your post.  Forgive me.....I'm new to all of this.

It depends on the application. Yes you can use the jumpcode (what is jumpcode?) to download and install to your phone.

But most apps even though touch versions will still have the dpad (what is dpad?) at the bottom of the screen. You will then have to mod the app to make fullscreen. (How do you mod the app?)

If the app accesses the internet, uses the gps, bluetooth, or memory card you will have to goatbreak (what is goatbreak?) to allow these permissions to work.  Most 3rd party apps you download from anywhere you will have to install with TKFE (what is TKFE?) or goatbreak to allow these permissions to work.  ATT locks their phone down hard to 3rd party apps.

When you install by downloading from rumkin, getjar, imserba,.....you go to their download page and enter the jumpcode they gave you to start the download and install. If you installed using those services you would know what I am talking about.

The dpad is the arrows that appear on the bottom of the screen for some apps. Most apps we remove them when we can. Mostly it is used for apps that are non touch screen.

As far as making games fullscreen by removing the dpad, goatbreaking, and tkfe there are stickies on the forum to answer your questions. It is nothing that can be answered in a few lines. I will set you up with some links. Best to do some searching next time please.

Installing with tkfe (leads to other links for using it)
