Almost any smart  phone could out-do the impression.  Some of us just don't have the money for higher priced phones, unfortunatly.  If I had the money I wouldn't have this phone, at least. But I do think it is one of the best non-smart phones. I'm sorry you had to switch back. I wish we could have found something for you.

The blackjack is not expensive like say the Blackberry or iPhone.
If it wasn't for the LED alert problem with the impression, I'd stay with it as I liked everything about the Impression. But being a deaf I have to have a better alert system.

Not all is lost. My wife loves her Impression, so we're keeping mine as a backup. And maybe someone will come up with a flashing backlight like this program has... this one has choices between led or backlight that comes on for however long you want it to. My wife is not deaf, so she doesn't need that feature. This is the link I'm talking about.

We have two Impressions and two blackjack II's

I'm legally deaf and can't hear phones, so I use these phones as PDA's, texting and email.
When I had my Blackberry and Blackjack, there were aps or programs you could buy that would turn the screen on when you get a text mail. It would either have a blinking light or the screen would come on and stay on for a certain amount of time.

Do they have anything like that for this phone? Or is their a hack that can be made for that?

I use the vibration when it's in my pocket, but I need something for when it's laying on the desk.

It's been awhile since this post. I've since been using the Blackjack II since it has the blinking LED and the back-light that also comes on & off at certain times until answered.

Has anyone come up with program or solution for the Impression yet.
I find it hard to believe that a program can't be made to get the back-light to come on at certain times for text messages.

I haven't found anything, sorry Sad. It's pretty dumb that they have that app for only certain phones. Not everyone is expexted to carry it in their pocket all the time, why should you be expected to?

It's almost impossible to make an app to do this; Java apps run in a sandbox (they have no access to the rest of the phone) and most smartphones let apps have some or full access to the phone.

Too bad. Other than not having a "visual" alert feature, I love the phone.
My wife loves the phone, so it works for her, she has two of them.
I have to have some kind of "visual" alert as I'm deaf, so in the next month or so, I'll probably get the iPhone or that new Samsung Captive phone.

I do appreciate the help that you people have tried to do on this.

OK, this is maddeningly frustrating.

My voice mail has a pop-up screen that pops up on the screen every so often and will keep it up until I answer it.

Now please explain why they can't do that for text mail?HuhHuhHuh?

Doesn't the voicemail server send the alert to your phone every so often and your phone shows it as a "new" alert?

I'm sorry I can't answer this one...I use Ribbit and get my voicemail alerts though text messages.

@luie, no the voicemail server does not send periodic notifications. The phone does it itself. Just audio though and does not wake screen every 2 minutes.

Well, since I could never solve the text alert feature I needed, I gave the phone to my wife and kept my blackjack II which has the alert features I need and just got me a new iPhone 3G to see how that works. Too bad as Samsung lost me as a customer. However my wife loves the phone. She don't need the alerts like I do. So I may be back on with questions in the future if my wife has any.

I appreciate the help some of you did trying to help solve my problem.  Smiley

sorry  i'm really late on responding to this, but you could get a small led from an electronic supplier and hook it up to the vibrator motor and drill a small hole in the top of the phone, sorry it's not the easy software answer your looking for but It could be made to look decent, actually thinking about doing it myself now. I loved my old BJ2 but wanted a touch screen and cheap data plan.
