Ok, first off THANKS a ton to vKitty for opening my eyes to the hack. She made a post earlier this month about it, saying she found the hack on an Eternity forum, but came to the conclusion that it did NOT work on our phones... I was dissapointed but read through the hack anyway.

After reading the instructions she posted, however, they failed to make sense. I am very grateful to the person who found this hack, but they wrote the instructions jerk-backwards and with many steps that don't need to be done.

At the time of the writing, I got >300kb ringtones to function perfectly using the internal memory. I am 99% positive that it will also work by putting the songs a miniSD card.

HERE IS WHAT I DID THAT WORKS:

1. Take an mp3 (or other ring tone format...) that is less than 300kb, put it on your phone, and set it as a ring tone.
2. Go into the phone with PC studio, or onto your memory card (wherever you stored the <300kb file at) and delete it.
3. Take an mp3 that is ANY size you want, RENAME THE FILE TO THE EXACT SAME NAME AS THE SMALLER MP3, then upload it to the phone to the same directory that the smaller mp3 was in.

4. You are DONE.

Here's a few tips:

The smaller file doesnt have to be the same song as the bigger one. It can be ANY mp3 ring tone.  Use one that you already have and upload it. Only the file names and file extension (*.mp3, *.aac, etc) have to be the same.

Whenever you want to set a new larger mp3 as your ring tone, just change the name of that file to the same name as the ringtone that is ALREADY on your phone, delete the tone that is on your phone and upload the new one. As long as the names are the same, you wont have to mess around with reactivating ringtones or any more file swapping. To keep things simple i just named the ringer on my phone ring.mp3 and keep changing the new tones to that name...

Again, I didnt discover this hack... thanks to vkitty for bringing it to our forum's attention as well as the samsung eternity forum for discovering it!

So far, I have not been able to get this to work from the SD card.  Each time that I select a ringtone from the SD card, it is copied into the Tones folder on the phone.  I think it must still be a requirement that ringtones are stored on the phone.

Ya, they are always copied to the phone.  You have to use the Samsung PC studio for this work around to work.

Yep, same with background and contact photos. Assign them from pics on the card and they get copied to the phone, then when you view your gallery you have 2 copies of the pics.

There has to be a setting inside the internals that makes null any size limitation on the ringtones.

Yeah discouraging illegal downlkoading of ringtones and all that, but hard coding it on the phone?Huh That would be too drastic...

Just sayin'

There is no setting in the internals. Every cell phone I ever had, had a limitation on ringtone size. That included nokias, motorolas, S.E., and samsuing.

Thanks for the tip, but...

I despise PC Studio and don't have it on my pc (have a 64bit OS) and was wondering if changing the file in TKFE would work? I was going to try, but I am such a newbie that I dont know if that would brick my phone or not.

Whatta you think?

Btw, a big thanks to the Ateam and everyone else on here. I was furious about my gps being locked out when I bought my phone, but now I love it! I would be lost without such a good tech community!!!

If you can connect your phone in media player, that mode should work also.

PC Studio works fine on my 64-bit OS even though i get an error everytime i start it up haha. just click ok and use it like normal. This trick works awesome, now i dont have to have lame quality ringtones.
