This setting doesnt disable 3G it just makes GSM first. Not sure why it makes it faster for you but if it does thats a good thing.

Yeah I read the setting choices & didn't see any disable 3G choice either, Only find one network type before the other selection. Don't know why GSM first makes G Maps faster unless every body moving to 3G freed up band width on GSM so G Maps isn't fighting to log on to Google's signal. Less traffic makes faster traffic.    TKfilerocker is right I tried it and changing the setting to GSm first makes  the network mode option available in the network and call settings menu. (*#197328640# go to 1(debug screen) then option 8(phone control) then option 3 (NAS Contriol) then option 3 UIM CLass (selecting this option changes the class) so if it was UTMS it will be GSM.
I changed the setting to "gsm first" and that allows me to change the network mode setting to whatever i want.(I have a 3g sim card and this option was not available until i changed the  Also, i live in a terrible network coverage area and changing the network mode setting to GSM 850 made my phone able to use the internet because my phone isnt always looking for 3g
Sorry AGoat GEuss you can't always be right LOL!

WARNING DON'T!!! with certain Sim cards doing this will cause the phone to not acknowledge the Sim. If you get a- No service Emergency Calls Only- pop up and an error message that reads- Sim Not Allowed MM # 3-,go back in and reset 3 UIM Class back to UTMS and service should return. This is about as close to bricking it as I want to get. Later---

Just found this forum after getting my impression and looking for how to turn off 3G...

It seems that the SIM card issue mentioned above only happens when you change the UIM class to GSM (using the *#197328640# code), but you DO NOT then change the network mode to GSM only (using the admin code *#6984125*#).  The phone/SIM/service will work in GSM, but if the phone searches for 3G, you get the SIM error.

So, to disable 3G, it seems that you need to:
1) change UIM class to GSM using *#197328640#
2) change the network mode to GSM only using *#6984125*# (the menu for "network mode" only comes up after doing step #1).

Does this work for others, or do you still get the SIM error?

My problem appeared after changing UIM class to GSM. Phone is running fine in GSM first mode. There is no option for GSM only using *#6984125*# only GSM first & 3G+ still shows in network icon, phone merely searches for GSM network first. Later---

Right.  I'm saying you WOULD have that problem if you failed to do step 2 in my prior post.  When I changed the class to GSM, the phone was fine.  Until it searched for a 3G signal, and then it would give the SIM error.  I THINK (not sure), if you complete steps 1 and 2, you will not have problems, and you will have disabled 3G.

Also, the option for GSM only using *#6984125*# shows up after you change the UIM class.  You might have to reboot to see it.

Just an update, and a clarifying point/step...

I have been using my phone for the last day+ in GSM only mode and have not seen the SIM card error.  The 3G symbols do not show up on the phone while operating, so 3G is disabled.  I will report back with the battery life difference in a couple of days between 3G and GSM only.

To clarify:  To disable 3G, complete the following steps:

1) change UIM class to GSM using *#197328640# (go to 1: debug, 8: phone control, 3: NAS control, and select 3: UIM class)
2) reboot phone
3) change the network mode to GSM only using *#6984125*# (go to 3: network & call settings, 3: network mode, and select "GSM Only") Note: the menu for "network mode" only comes up after doing step #1 and #2.
4) reboot phone

You will get the SIM card error if you only complete step 1.  And, you will not disable 3G if you only choose "GSM first" in the network order.

At the top of the screen you will have 3G, 3G+, E, or G that shows your data connection.
