PLEASE LOOK HERE! and use are you own risk as it could brick your phone.

*TEASER*

For this tutorial, I'll assume that you have:
  • MGMaps(the application)
  • GPS hack
  • MicroSD card
  • *drum roll*A CELLPHONE- Either an Eternity or an >Impression<(my poison)

Step 1
Select the portion of the map to cache and specify the zoom levels on this site: http://www.mapcacher.com/
(Follow the instructions on the site) You should have a .map file upon completion.

Step 2
Download gMapMaker here: http://www.mgmaps.com/cache/gMapMaker-setup.exe (I swear on my gorgeous AMOLED screen that this isn't a virus(or nudie pics))

Step 3
Open up gMapMaker.
Note the Cache folder because that is what you're going to be uploading onto your SD card.
Hit go and direct it to the .map file, created earlier.(Make sure that the operating mode is set to MGMaps mode-using the .map file)
My other settings were as follows: Max Parallel Downloads: 3, Hash size: 97
You can experiment depending on your preference.

Step 4
After the maps finish downloading, which can take a while depending on how many levels you've chosen, copy the MGMapsCache folder over to your MicroSD card.(I'm assuming you know how)

Step 5
On your phone, open up MGMaps, go to Settings>Map Browsing, check Stored Maps and Offline Mode, Scroll down to the Storage Path, select it, hit menu>browse>[direct it to the MGMapsCache folder-e.g. Mmc/MGMapsCache], hit menu again and save.

Step 6
Close and reopen MGMaps. Once again, we open up settings>Map Types and check Google Maps.(the first option under Googe) You can also uncheck all of the other map types as you won't be needing them.

Step 7
If you've unchecked all other map types, you should see the maps that you've cached, if not, press zero(multiple times, if needed) to switch the map type.

And that is it ladies and gents. Kiss

I'm open to any questions.

Very nicely done organdonor. I knew you would get this tutorial done. This will help alot of people out who dont have data. Where is the fullscreen though? I thought you would have made it full screen.  If you download the beta version you can even remap the keys on the sliding keyboard for shortcuts.

I came across a program you might be intersted in. Its WeTravel from http://we-travel.co.cc/

Its a turn by turn free gps program for our phones. And the pictures of the GUI looks great. I even installed it on my phone just to look at it. But it is not for the newbie. You download the program, sounds, and different icons for the screen all seperately. You can actually replace the sounds with your voice or someone elses. They are just wave files. Heck you could probably make your own icons too.  Then you install the maps. It takes a certain kind of maps. It does not use data. You have to put your own maps on it. Problem is they only have maps for new york and  california so it doesnt fit me right now. So you have to make your own maps. They said something about using garmin maps. They have a map making program and so on. I thought you might be interested looking into this and see what you can do since you did a great job with mgmaps. Looks like this program could be the closest thing to a real garmin and never have to use data again once installed.  Let me know.

By the way a cookie for you for your tutorial.

Thanks.  Grin

I'm still digging through programs to find the best mapping or gps software for myself, so I haven't had the opportunity to download the developmental version yet. Though, remapping the keys along with full screen sounds like a blessing.

I can't believe I didn't find that program earlier.
THANK YOU!! That is exactly what I've been searching for.
Even though the program is still in it's early stages, it looks exceptionally functional.

Currently, I'm stuck trying to get the mapgenerator to work. Curse you MYSQL! It's almost totally new to me, all of those commands and the database structure. Gar....

Do you by any chance have any experience with MYSQL? I definitely can use some help here.

I'd give you a cookie if I could for discovering that little gem.

I am not able to select a storage path. when I did menu-->browse, the menu button became select. now no matter which button I click, it keeps looping through the folder. I cannot make a selection.

If you want it to read maps offline without the internet then yes you have to convert some google maps and install them on your phone.

If you have a data plan then maps will download for you.

Please go to mgmaps.com and read the user manual. It will answer all your questions for you.

Dont bother wasting your time with it. I have tried to convert maps and their map converter is still full of bugs. Their app is full of bugs. There is one person doing support and writing the program and he has been busy with finals. It will be another year before this app is useable.

This is organdonor's project but have you gone to mgmaps.com? They have a nice tutorial there on how to set this thing up. I got data so i dont have too.  Grin

OK, save the MGMapsCache folder on your memory card. I have version 1.4. When you select settings/map/stored maps I have stored maps checked and offline mode checked. If you tap in the little square after browse it takes you to your file system. Doubletap on mmc/ then singletap on MGMapsCache/ it is highlighted then I tap on select. It takes you back to the menu where you selected browse. You should now see the stored maps folder as Mmc/MGMapsCache. Tap on menu and then save. Now go back into the menu and select stored maps. I just used the normal google map so that is all I have selected. Make sure nothing else is selected. Hit menu and then save. Cancel out of the menu and it will tell you, you need to reboot Mgmaps. Do it.

I went outside and started mgmaps.  Waited for the gps to kick in. Took about 15secs. The map type you saved and selected should be in the bottom right hand corner.  If you need to tap the number 9 to center your position. I have full screen so i needed to open my keyboard and hit 9. Now all I have on my screen is google map words. I zoomed out till I had a map. Hmmm, guess level 12 is not too zoomed.

Total process from downloading map tools to finished product took me about 20 minutes for a google map half the size of PA levels 7-12.  This is awesome no data needed.

My next questions for organdonor is have you saved multiple maps? Do you have to choose a different storage folder or is there a way you can just press '0' to switch to the next map. And it seems mgmaps has 18 levels of zoom. I am going back to the map creator to see if i can change the 12 to 18.

Also on that map selector page. When i click on a spot for a marker how comes it puts my marker like 100 or more miles south?

OK went back to the map selector and chose a slightly bigger map and upped my zoom level to 18. Seems it takes a little longer to make this map. Should have made it a little smaller. Oh well. Should be a good map if it fits on my card. Will report back when done and i see how it performs.
