I've just made a new free & opensource e-book reader for Java Mobile phones. I wonder if I am allowed to present it to the audience?

Thanks guys!

Thanks undiscovered! Here goes.

Albite READER is a free and open-source e-book reader for the Java mobile, released under the Apache 2.0 License and developed by Svetlin Ankov. Here's a list of the features in a nutshell.

  • works with .EPUB, .HTML and .TXT files
  • anti-aliased bitmap font in four sizes with over 500 glyphs, including latin, cyrillic and greek
  • hyphenation for 29 languages
  • 23 character encodings, including UTF-8 and most of ISO-8859 and Windows-125x
  • animated touch-guided scrolling
  • horizontal and vertical scrolling
  • on-touch dictionary look up
  • units conversion: temperature, length, area, ...
  • portrait and landscape view
  • images and basic styling
  • color profiles
  • portable book settings
  • bookmarks
  • table of contents

Anyone interested may have a look at the official site and watch the demo.

The site also features over 2000 e-books prepared for usage on mobile devices (e.g. images have been resized and compressed, etc.). There's also a mobile-friendly version of the site so that one could download the reader and the books directly and conveniently from their phone.

I hope you'd like it! :-)

I've always been curious about e-book readers. If you were to download an e-book online, what file format would it have to be to work in this app?

The books that you can dl straight from the site come in a *.epub format which is a pretty generic format and it looks like lots of e-books come in that format.

It's absurd but I've missed the crucial point: the app works with .EPUB, .HTML and .TXT files. Optimal performance is achieved when reading EPUB books as they have several advantages.

There's a lot of info on the official site if anyone is interested. All books there are in EPUB. One can download books directly from the mobile version of the site, too, give it a try.

The main idea behind my project is that Android and iPhone owners have such great readers, so I thought I could help Java Mobile users.

Make sure you goatbreak the app if you install it by downloading to grant read/write permissions. Otherwise get the jar and jad and install with TKFE.

I also tested this on my samsung solstice and it worked so I have added it the third party software list there as well. Hope you don't mind.  Grin

Also I used Albite READER 2.0.10 with touch support and works fine.

Thanks E.Cadro! I don't mind having my app in the list. On the contrary, I am honoured and pretty much in debt to you!

I'd like to point out that I've been testing the app on my Samsung GT-S5230 so it should work pretty much the same on Samsung Impression. As you mentioned the Normal version (the one in beige) is the right choice for the device.

The e-books cannot be downloaded through Samsung's browser, sorry. I generally find it much more convenient using Opera Mini, which wouldn't mind downloading any kind of file.

By the way, if you find yourself reading a book and using the app for a more prolonged time, would you confirm that all works O.K., so that I could officially put Samsung Impression on the list of supported phones?

There was a bug that prevented the app from opening .TXT files. I've just fixed it. It's version 2.0.11 now.

This is a great app!  Thanks for providing it.

I keep getting the message "sorry no dictionary found or folder not set".  How do I go about setting a dictionary to this program?

Firstly, thanks for the response. Glad you liked it!

Now, make sure that your phone's got enough heap memory (4MB+) or the app may behave funny.
Setting up the folder is simple, see here. If you are still wondering, watch the demo video and at the place where dictionary functionality is being presented (1:07).

I'd like also to announce version 2.0.12 in which I've updated the font so the app supports 850+ glyphs now.

I just wanted to drop by and say thanks, I'm from the Samsung Behold Forum, and I've been hoping for an Ereader like this for a while now. In fact, this app is better than what I dreamed of!  Wink
