Here is a new browser for the impression. It actually came from the samsung mythic as a second browser that ATT installed on that phone.  I made some changes to the resolution so it displays properly on our phone. You will see that it is a rebadged opera mini 4.2 browser with quite alot new functions added to it.  Well worth taking a look at. I also added the rotate command so it goes landscape when you open the keyboard.

How to install. This browser will not work without using the original jad. So dont just download the jar and try and install it because it wont work. I am telling you now. The best way to install is to use the TKFE install method. Or you can send the jar to rumkin to install. Dont run the app. Then connect with TKFE and copy over the original jad to the folder making sure it still has the same name as the jar except with the jad extension. Rumkin you wont have to rename but with imserba you will. Then delete the appdb folder and you are done.

After the install you might want to go to the settings and turn off inline editing so the keyboards work properly. No blue windows with this browser with inline editing off. Also it automatically links to your ATT account where you can check up on it. It has local info that auto finds you with triangulation. Check email. And a local and popular tab. I really like it.  It also does rss feeds. I have rss feeds for the forums set up easily.  Also it has a nice way to check the weather.

So give it a try people and lets hear some feedback.

Works good. I like the features but you can't use the virtual keyboard..thats a bummer, but it is landscape when you open it. Better than the other web browser at&t gave us. Thanks Agoat!

Why cant you use the virtual keyboard? You can use it just like in opera mini.  Dont open your slider and it will use it instead.  It is like opera mini 4.2, not like the beta.

Also here is a review and some hints that I copied from the net.

att.net doesn't look much like Opera Mini, especially the initial screen which has three tabs;

•"Web" with the enter URL field, Yahoo search box and six large "My Favorite" buttons that you can assign to your most used sites.
•Local" with weather, local search, movie listings and local news.  The page's location is originally tied to your account's billing address but it's supposed to use cell-id based location to update as you move around.
•"Popular" with the latest News, Sports and Entertainment headlines.
Once you open a web page with the att.net browser it starts to look and act much more like Opera Mini 4.2 with fast loads of virtually any Web page, very good rendering and a choice of Opera's fit to width "Mobile View"  or zoomable "Desktop View" options.  The menus, soft keys and shortcuts are basically the same as Opera Mini's. A nice edition to att.net is the "inline editing"  feature from the Opera Mini 5 Beta. All editing of text fields in web forms is done inline instead of in a separate window.  Thanks to the Reveal's QWERTY keyboard, inline editing works very well with upper and lower case letters and special characters all available directly from the keyboard using the Shift and Alt keys.  Numbers are entered with the 9-key phone keypad which remains active when the QWERTY keyboard is slid out.

However, AT&T has inexplicably removed a number of Opera Mini's standard features.

•"*" plus 1-9 "Speed Dial" shortcuts to your favorite sites are missing.  The "My Favorites" feature does partially compensate for this.  You can press "0" or "#" + "4" to jump to the home page and scroll to and click one of your favorites. That works but requires more keypresss than with Speed Dials.
•There's no popup menu listing the browser's menu short cuts.  Except for the Speed Dials most of the standard Opera Mini hotkey shortuts are still available. But they don't seem to be documented in the online help or anywhere else.  Here's a complete list of Opera Mini's  shortcuts and what does and doesn't work on the Reveal:
0 - Homepage (att.net only, this is not a standard Opera Mini shortcut)
1 - Context menu offering desktop and mobile view toggle, page and link information, refresh and image zoom.
2 - Page Up
4- Page Left
5 - Zoom In/Out in Desktop View
6 - Page Right
8 - Page Down
* 1-9 - Speed Dial Shortcuts (don't work, use "My Favorites" instead.)
* 0  - RSS Feed Reader
* * - Toggle full screen (doesn't work, space wasting status bars can't be hidden).
* # - Switch between landscape and portrait view (doesn't work, landscape only)
# 1 - Enter URL
# 2 - Bookmarks (doesn't work)
# 3 - Jump between top and bottom of the page
# 4 - Start Page
# 5 - History
# 6 - Page Information
# 7 - Add Bookmark (doesn't work)
# 8 - Settings
# 9  - Web Search (doesn't work, use search on the home screen instead)
# 0 - Refresh
# # - Forward
#  * - Find in page

AT&T removed some other Opera Mini functionality as well.

•The left and right dPad keys don't page up and down in mobile view.
•You can't save pages or upload and download files. App, game and media downloads are handled by a hidden copy of the Obigo WAP browser that opens when you click a link to one of these types of content.
•Several items on the settings menu are gone too including Skins (you are stuck with the browser's default AT&T orange skin), the option to hide long lists of links behind a plus sign icon and the ability to switch the network connection between socket and HTTP.
Opera Mini's Hidden Power User Settings menu does work in att.net.  See power user settings down below.  AT&T removed several option here too. "Site Patches", "Fold linklists" and "Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts" are missing from the Power User Settings inAT&T's browser.
My take on the Reveal itself is an otherwise fairly unremarkable sliding QWERTY 3G HSDPA feature phone with 2.2 inch QVGA display, 1.3-megapixel camera. microSD and music player.  The addition of the att.net browser transforms it into the best feature phone in AT&T's lineup.

Opera mini is quite configurable. Using the build in "Settings" menu (top image) you can:

•Set the default font size.
•Change image quality or turn off images entirely to manage memory and bandwidth use.
•Toggle fit-to-width "mobile view".
•Switch the default view  between portrait and  landscape.
•Disable fancy sliding screen transitions which can be slow on some phones.
•Change the default skin.
•Toggle  full-screen mode.
•Choose whether pages should open zoomed out or zoomed when the browser is in desktop mode.
•Turn off auto-completion of URL entries.  This is something I turn  off as I find the auto completion more trouble than it's worth. I can enter URLs more quickly using the phone's default input handler which lets me easily  switch between abc, T9, symbols and numbers.
•Switch the clock display between 12 and 24 hour modes.
There is another undocumented  "Power Users" settings menu hidden in Opera Mini.  To access it enter the URL config: in Opera Mini's address bar and select "OK" or "Go To".  A screen similar to the one in the bottom image should appear.  Power User Settings include:

•Large placeholders for images.  (Default:Yes) If you have images turned off or Opera Mini doesn't have enough memory to load all the images on large pages it will show colored boxes which by default have the same dimensions as the original images.  Choosing No is supposed to make Opera Mini use smaller boxes which I think I'd prefer. Unfortunately this option doesn't seem to work, I still get the large  boxes with it set No.  Aside: I'd really wish Opera Mini would follow web standards and display the image's Alt Text when can't display an image.
•Fit text to screen (Default:Yes)  In desktop mode, Opera Mini reflows text columns so they fit the screen's width for easy reading.  This is generally a good thing but it can make parts of pages look ugly and cause overlapping text, especially in tabbed menus.  Changing this setting to "No" will cause the page to be rendered just like it would be in a desktop browser.  While this makes the page prettier, it also means you have to scroll back and forth  horizontally on every line to read text. I tried it and quickly set it back to the default!•Use bitmap fonts for complex scripts (Default=No) Opera mini normally uses your phone's built in fonts which generally have characters for only a handful of languages.  If you try to view a Chinese webpage with a phone that doesn't have Chinese fonts all you will see is a bunch of squares in the place of characters.   Setting this option causes Opera to render the text of any language your phone doesn't support as an image of the the text. This will make the page load more slowly but at least you will be able to read it.  Apparently quite a few languages supported by this feature. I haven't been able to find a list but users have reported that they were able to view Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and  Bengali pages using this feature.
•Loading Timeout (default:30) This is my favorite Power User setting.  It specifies how seconds the Opera Mini server should wait for a 3rd party web server to respond before giving up and displaying a timeout message. There are some slow sites on the web aznd 30 seconds is just too short.  Before this error was added I'd often get a timeout on HowardForums.com or if I asked Bloglines to show all the posts in my subscribed feeds for the last 24 hours.  I set the timout to the maximum allowed, 3600 seconds, and now I never see timeouts.  If a site is really down or I get tired of waiting, I just press the right softkey labeled STOP to make Opera mini give up. Pressing STOP works fine on my phones although it can cause lockups on Palm OS devices.  If you have one of those you might be better off setting the timeout to 60 or 120.
•Show feedindex (default:Yes) The default causes Opera Mini to show an RSS feed icon at the top on any page that has a feed.  Clicking the icon adds the feed to Opera Mini's built in feed reader.I don't use the Opera Mini reader because it doesn't synchronize with anything and seems to lose my subscribed feeds with every server upgrade.  If you are serious about feeds you will want to use Bloglines or Google Reader as your feed reader in Opera Mini.  I do like to see the feed icon though as it tells me when a site has a feed that I can add to Bloglines using a bookmarklet.
•Keep styling in RSS feeds (default:No) As I mentioned I don't use Opera Mini's built in feed reader but I'd think changing this to Yes would improve the appearance and formatting of feeds in Opera Mini. It seems strange that it defaults to No.
•Fold linklists (default:Yes) When  Opera Mini is in mobile view it will replace long lists of links with a plus sign graphic.  Clicking the plus sign will expand the list.  The intention is to make large repetitive menus less intrusive.  I set this to No  as it tends to collapse things I want to see like news headlines or  the list of unread feeds in Bloglines.
•Phonenumber detection (default: Yes) Opera Mini tries to detect plain text phone numbers in web pages and turn them in click to call links.  When this feature first came out is was buggy and tended to treat "1 2 3 4"  page menus on web forums etc. as phone numbers so that clicking them tried to dial 1234 instead of loading the next page.  That bug has been fixed and I don't see any reason to disable the very useful phone number detection feature.
•Minimum phone number length (Default:9) Numbers less than this length will never be detected as phone numbers. US phone numbers are 10 digits so you could set it to that, although leaving at nine seems to work fine.
While most of the Power User settings are of limited use I'm really happy about the ability to increase the Loading Timeout and to turn off linklist folding.  Although I don't use it (English is my only language) the ability to use server side bitmaps to display character sets that the phone doesn't support is another great feature.  I'm glad the Power User Settings are there although I think Opera should make them easier to find.

Love this new browser.  Not sure if I'll use it more than regular old opera, but like it much better than Media.net

Any idea if we can make this our "default" browser? If not a widget for it would be awesome.  Thanks for finding this agoat.

Awesome browser! Thanks for the find Goat!!!  Smiley  Too bad it doesn't display images when viewing email like Bolt, but I agree with Kenny and like it better than Media Net.

It does view images when viewing email. Did you put it in desktop mode? Did you go to a full html or a mobile version of your mobile web?

I unchecked the "Mobile View" box and tried checking/unchecking the "Landscape Mode" box to see if that made any difference - same results. I don't see any images when I'm viewing my Hotmail emails from the html Hotmail site. All I get is text, but if I view the site with Bolt, the images appear.

Also, after running the ATT browser today, my phone got stuck on the Java screen. I tried ending the program and it was stuck on the "Ending Java" screen, even after pulling the battery and rebooting, the phone tells me "Error - Failed to connect to the internet." It seems that this is the same intermittent problem that I've been having with the data connection and the phone not connecting to any network for data, although I can still make calls. When this happens, I get two red squiggly lines by the 3G icon at the top of the home screen on the phone when trying to connect to data/internet. When I end the app, the 3G returns to its normal icon. Now the phone doesn't even reset the data/internet when I pull the battery and reboot...

My wife and I both have the Impression, but this only happens to my phone, so it's not the area we're in. Any ideas?

Well I had the same thing happen to me today with this browser. I typed something in on the qwerty and hit ok and it went to the loading java screen. Maybe this browser just isnt going to be a good addition to this phone.  I also had to pull the battery but didnt have any after effects.

Were you using virtual qwerty or the slideout keyboard? Maybe the app has issues with the rotate command.
